This blog is interesting because I never knew there was an option to receive video feedback. Video feedback is probably a lot more helpful for auditory learners. The question I asked was “Does my ePortfolio illustrate that I have made connections between the course content and relevant experiences outside of the course and/or between this course and other courses?” The feedback from my video did indicate that I made connections between course content and relevant experiences outside of the course; however, at times, it seems like I repeated some of the same connections in numerous blogs. Additionally, race was a theme seen in a lot of my blogs and assignment takeaways. To be honest, I didn’t modify my blog entries at all. I know I have an audience, but I wanted every blog to reflect my personal interpretation of material and assignments, which, in most cases, resonated with me on gender or racial levels. I chose this image because it is representative of the video feedback.

When I first started this course, I did think some of the assignments were fluffy and had no real substance that aligned with learning objectives; however, blogging did help me apply what I learned in class to real life situations. Throughout these weeks of class, I feel I have achieved all of the course objectives. To me, social psychology is still one of the more difficult courses I’ve had to take because a lot of the readings are not based on empirical data. If I took the class again, I would make sure I didn’t miss exam one, but that’s the only thing i would do differently. Academically, I can say I’ve honestly learned more about social psychology in the work place. That has helped me a lot being in the military, which is a multicultural, multi-generational, male-dominated field.
I chose the image above because it shows that I took the initiative to open my mind to explore and digest the information available in the class.

This course had been truly eye-opening. One concept I discussed in my blog was how women are treated as the submissive sex in most cultures. In the blog 8, I discussed how an Asian woman was apologetic because she had to let a cashier know her transaction was entered incorrectly. This aligned with what I wrote about in assignment takeaway 4, which examined male and female advertisements in the United States and China. In the Chinese advertisements, the women are small, frail, and submissive, especially in advertisements with both men and women. This concept carries over to what I learned in the Psychology of Women. Within that course, we examined the role of women in each cultures, and Asian women were more likely to stay in a bad marriage because they are raised to be dominated by men. This is neither good or bad, but it is a concept that has carried across assignments and courses. I chose the image above because this course has forced me to examine multicultural views through the lenses of one set of eyes, my eyes.

People watching is one of my favorite things to do. Because of my favorite past time, I have seen quite a few interesting interactions. In one situation, a middle-aged Asian woman was over charged for a dress she purchased at Macy’s. She didn’t notice it until she received her receipt at the register. I could tell by the look on her face that she did not want to even mention it, but the cost different was significant. She actually apologized to the associate for the inconvenience of having to void the previous order and enter a new one. I could tell she was uncomfortable with confrontation. This is the type of behavior I would have expected. I have a few Korean co-workers, and they are always apologetic and avoid eye contact if they have to correct someone’s mistake. Me, on the other hand, I welcome confrontation and have no problem speaking p for myself. The concept of universality and cultural display do explain some of my experiences. I chose the above photograph because it could be perceived as an “angry” black woman. I encounter that a lot in the workplace simply because I don’t smile all day. I just chose this photo because I relate with her facial expression on a daily basis-it lacks excitement, but I am not mad nor happy.

I do believe that fairy tales reflect a shared set of cultural norms and values. The main character in almost every fairy tale gains control of their lives and conquers whatever problem or situation originally kept them bound, which allows young audiences to take control of their own situations. Additionally, fairy tales help young people realize that it’s okay to take the less popular road to achieve one’s dreams. For example, Beauty and the Beast illustrates this philosophy. Beauty did not want to give the Beast a chance, but her compassion allowed her to see past his flaws, and she actually became a princess in the process. Cinderella is the character I can identify with. I was not abused verbally by a stepmother, but I have had so called friends try to keep me from achieving my full potential. Regardless of their negativity, I thrived, and I am now functioning at my highest level. I chose a picture of Cinderella because despite her hardships, she came out on top while loving the individuals who meant her no good.

The self determination theory is quite interesting and all of the components that is comprised of. In order to satisfy my need for autonomy, I established my own career path, went into the military, and pursued a degree in psychology. I initiated all of these things on my own, and it certainly makes me happy. I am in the process of satisfying the need for competence. I am slowly becoming a subject matter expert within my current profession. Being competent at anything gives someone a sense of accomplishment that no one can take from you. Competence and autonomy are both being fulfilled by my academic endeavors. I can truly say that pursuing a degree gives a person something to look forward to. Also, the knowledge gained can never be taken from away. I chose the image above because it shows all of the components rolling around in my head, which come together to satisfy my autonomy.

According to the “Who am I” statements, statements 1, 2, 4, and 6 are associated with the independent construal of self. Alternately, numbers 3, 5, 7, 8, and 9 are interdependent construal of self. Based on the information the number of statements that were interdependent, I can only assume that I am more interdependent. “Teamwork makes the dream work” is an example of interdependent self. In addition, it is one of my favorite proverbs/sayings. It is actually posted on my station at work. “No one can be better at being you, than you” is an example of independent self. It was equally easy for me to think of each type of proverb; however, the proverbs that I look too most often align with interdependent self. I believe that is because I am military personnel, and the “team” and “comrades” are of utmost importance. I chose this image because “You” is at the center of the photo; however , mind, body, spirit, and soul are components that me me whole.

I did not have the ability to take Exam 1 as a result of me being overseas. I did contact the instructor, within the time period, but I forgot I am 15 hours ahead in Korea, so I missed the open window for a test reset. Additionally, I did complete the review sheet, which still helped me ensure that I was properly preparing for the exam. Regardless of not being able to take the exam, I still feel I gained valuable information from the module. This whole experience did teach me one valuable lesson, I must continuously check the student announcement board, and as soon as an exam becomes available, I will take it instead of waiting. I take this misfortune in stride and look forward to completing the next examination. I chose this image because it is a common educational tool that instructors/teachers use to evaluate student learning outcomes.

I did complete the assessment in its entirety; however, I was quite unclear on how to total the answers for questions. I do think the assessment showed that I am inconsistent. For example, I strongly dislike being around people; however, I am passionate and courteous towards people. In real life, that is quite untrue. When I am around people for too long, I am short, rude and get annoyed. I dont belive I’m neurotic, but I guess the way I answered some of the questions would indicate otherwise. To create the wordle, I checked the items as follows: N (low); secure, hardy, and generally relaxed even under stressful conditions: E (low); introverted, reserved, and serious. You prefer to be alone or with a few close friends: O (average); practical but willing to consider new ways of doing things. You seek a balance between the old and the new: A (high); compassionate, good-natured, and eager to cooperate and avoide conflict: C (high); consceintious and well-organized. You have high sandards and always strive to achieve your goals. I am inclined to agree with these results, but they were based on what I think about myself, not the assessment.

Integrity and strong work ethic are values that are important to my career goals. To be honest, those are values that should be instilled in everyone. Throughout my life, there have been several experiences that pushed me toward going to college and earning a degree in psychology:
- I had a wonderful teacher in high school during my senior year, Mrs. Hightower. She taught social sciences and psychology. The passion she had for the subject was captivating, and it peaked my interest.
- I had to complete a salary comparison study in high school, which made me realize that I could have significantly more money if I completed a college degree.
After completing high school, going to college was not an option. My parents, teachers, and group of friends expected it. I did well in high school because I knew I wanted to go to college. I took AP courses so I could get college credit and graduate sooner. My peer groups’, family, and instructors’ expectations of me gave me the confidence to actually pursue a degree in higher education.
The title of this picture is “Life of an Online Student”. I titled the picture that because I feel like I learn so much online that it literally spills out of the computer and overflows into my life, which is an excellent and fulfilling educational experience.

From this course, I hope to gain an understanding of the diverse cultural influences that affect the way individuals interact with one another. I go into no class with expectations. I simply hope to be sponge eager to soak in as much information as possible from this course and all of the courses I’ve taken thus far. The strategy I use for learning material is real-world application. I love to practice what I have learned in class in work. social, and private interactions. By doing so, I am able to evaluate my own interactions with people and what approach/level of acceptance I am using.
The image above is entitled “Cultures Make the World Go Around”; I titled this picture because I feel this is the objective of the course. We are on this journey to evaluate and gain understanding of how cultural perspectives influence our outlooks.
