The 2019 season for the LSU Tigers football team was a season unlike any season ever had before. LSU was led by Coach Ed Orgeron and LSU quarterback Joe Burrow. This LSU team had 14 future NFL players on their roster. These players were, Joe Burrow, Justin Jefferson, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, K’Lavon Chassion, Patrick Queen, Damien Lewis, Lloyd Cushenberry, Rashard Lawrence, Saadhiq Charles, Grant Delpit, Kriston Fulton, Jacob Phillips and Stephen Sullivan and even more that were signed as free agents. This team to this day has set a new standard of greatness in College Football. Every team is now compared to “the 2019 LSU Tigers.”
The Greatest QB in College Football
Current Cincinnati Bengals Quarterback Joe Burrow transferred to LSU in 2018 from his former school the Ohio State Buckeyes. Joe Burrow arrived at LSU with really nothing to his name. In just two seasons, Joe Burrow left a Louisiana legend. At LSU he accomplished more than anyone else ever had. He was the quarterback of what most people say, the greatest team ever. Joe Burrow threw for 5,671 passing yards, 60 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. He led LSU to a 15 and 0 record with 7 top ten wins, he won the Heisman Award, the Maxwell award, Walter Camp Award, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, Walter Camp Award, Davey O’Brien Award, Manning Award, Manning Award, Lombardi Award, AP College Football player of the year Award, and more.
Joe Burrow had many great moments during the course of the season. It seems to be that Joe Burrow locked up the Heisman race against the Alabama Crimson Tide when Joe Burrow and LSU ended the 8-year losing streak to the Tide. One play that seemed to seal the deal was when Joe Burrow had a quarterback draw on 3rd down late in the game and got a first down which led to an LSU touchdown.
A Shift in Culture
For a very long time LSU and their football program has centered their offense around the run game. Their run game was carried by running backs like Leanord Fournette. And while these running backs were really good, the offense typically fell short due to being one dimensional. But in the offseason leading to the 2019 season, LSU hired Offensive Coordinator Joe Brady from the New Orleans Saints. Joe Brady turned the LSU offense into a heavy pass machine that no one could stop.
That season LSU’s new high-powered offense averaged 48.4 points per game, scored 40 points in 12 of their 15 games, while breaking every record. Joe Burrow had very good weapons at wide receiver named Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase. Jefferson in the 2019 season had 1,540 yards and 18 touchdowns and Chase had 1,780 yards with 20 touchdowns.
LSU went 15-0 and won the National Championship, but their season was filled with other great teams. LSU beat seven top ten teams including, Texas, Florida, Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma and Clemson in the National Championship.
In the National Championship, LSU played against the defending national champion, the Clemson Tigers who LSU had previously beaten in a past National Championship.
Clemson was led by an all-time great quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Clemson started the game fast and held an early ten-point lead against the LSU Tigers. But then LSU came back and won easily 42-25 as Joe Burrow threw for 463 yards and five touchdowns.
The Greatest Team Ever
Most people say that the 2019 LSU team is the best team to ever do it. All the broken records, the awards, the seven top ten wins and the National Championship. It was a perfect season with generational players with a revamped offense coached by Joe Brady.
