At ODU, given as there are many programs and areas of study available, with this comes lots of offered majors that do in fact relate to the major of Cybersecurity. This is largely the case being as how each of these majors all share a certain likeness with that of cybersecurity, whether this is seen considering they fall under the bigger computer, programming, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) umbrella, or by also too, having similar focuses and studies amongst them, in this regard. To this point, one major that almost immediately comes to mind, is that of Computer Science. With this, there are surely similarities, and relation between Computer Science and Cybersecurity, being as both are technology related majors, and fields that both use programming languages, (i.e. Java, and Linux), that could be used for a multitude of things, such as possibly identifying vulnerabilities, and protecting data. Moreover, with Information Technology (IT), this major is also one that is very closely related to Cybersecurity as well, as with it comes the securing, configuring, and maintenance of networks, which is not too very far off from what is done in Cybersecurity, seeing as how some professionals focus on securing networks as well through the implementation of firewalls, and or too, other detection methods as well. Next, with Electrical and Computer Engineering, this major has a correlation with Cybersecurity, as engineers develop and implement secure technologies from a physical standpoint, that to the likes of which is used in Cybersecurity, in some capacity. Lastly, beyond this, an additional major that shares commonalities with cybersecurity, although albeit less from a tech perspective, is that of Criminology. With this, there can absolutely be parallels drawn between Criminology and Cybersecurity, given how criminology studies crime and criminals, and how with Cybersecurity, the very notion of security, is to prevent against attacks and threats from hackers and cybercriminals, and or too individuals looking to gain something in general, whether that be money, data, or personal information, and more.
