- Transition to College
- What did you expect college would be like 14 weeks ago?
14 weeks ago I expected college to be fun but also challenging. I heard many stories about how college is supposed to be the best for years of your life but covid just made it alot different for us. I believe that the pandemic made it even harder for some of us. I was online due to the pandemic for the remainder of my senior year, so I expected it to be challenging because it wasn’t going to be face to face. I was right. The workload that we had was nothing compared to high school.
- What is something you wish you knew 14 weeks ago?
14 weeks ago I wish I knew more coming into the college setting. I knew a lot about odu campus and what it had to offer but I did not know much about my classes. If I would have put in more effort to understand what my classes would cover, the elements of it all it would have been better for me.
- What is a resource or activity you have found helpful this semester?
Do counselors and advisors count as resources? Because they were the most helpful in providing me with feedback on any questions I had to ask during the semester and for helping me get set up for next semester. The financial aid office was also a big help to me by informing me of scholarships and helping me with my payments for school. Another resource that helped me was the library I was able to go there for computer use for projects that I needed to complete.
- What is a resource or activity you have found unhelpful this semester?
I would not say that a resource was unhelpful because they all do a certain thing in different areas of your education and I believe that anybody can benefit from them.
- Name something you have learned this semester that will assist you next semester?
Something I have learned from this semester is to NOT PROCRASTINATE! This semester this was a very bad habit for me because I would wait until the last minute and be overwhelmed by all that I had to do when it was given to me days ago. I also learned that it is absolutely okay to ask for help when you need it. In high school I would just learn to do things by myself, I never wanted or liked to ask for help but sometimes it is needed!
- Study Habits
- How much time do you spend studying for each class now vs. at the beginning of the semester?
At the beginning of the semester It started off very easy for me, so I only devoted about 2-3 hours every class to studying. As it became more and more intense I made a system for myself. For the classes that I was doing badly in I would devote the majority of my time to them, and for the classes that I was doing well in I would spend less time studying for those classes. Now as we get in preparation for the final exam every class has an equal amount of study time to help me for my final exam grades.
- How have your study habits changes?
My study habits haven’t changed much from the beginning of the semester until now. I still take notes and make them neat and colorful for me to remember and I also use sites like Quizlet to help me study some of the information that was presented in class.
- What specific study techniques do you think work best for you? How do these vary from class to class?
The study techniques that work the best for me are color coded note taking. I feel like when I see things in color I am able to memorize it better. Also I like to use a quizlet and they have an option on there where you can make your own flashcards. They also turn your flashcards into games and mini quizzes for you to practice. This is the same way for every class except for chem lab just because the labs that we go over are basically our tutorials.
- Health Professions Learning Community
- This semester you were enrolled in at least SOC 201S, and HLTH 101. Many of you were also enrolled in CHEM 105N and CHEM 106N, and some of you were enrolled in HIST 104H with Professor White.
- On the surface these classes do not appear to be connected however this semester each professor was intentional about drawing connections between content, and subjects discussed. Discuss the ways in which these courses are tied together.

These courses are tied together because everyone of them taught us something about making a connection to the real world. Even in chemistry, like how we did labs that had something to do with outside elements, or in sociology where we deal with different behaviors in the world.
- This semester we provided events (Health Chats) for you to hear from health professionals from ODU.
- Which Health Chat was most beneficial for you as a student, and why?
The health chat that was most beneficial to me was when the recreational therapist came to talk to our soc class. This was most beneficial because my career choices were between nursing and teaching but as a recreational therapist, you are able to work with kids and help them heal physically and emotionally.
