Study Habits:
- What classes are you doing well in, and why? At the moment I have all A’s, so I am doing well in all of my classes. Although, the class I am doing the best in is history. I am doing the best in history because I get my work done on time and make sure I have completed the work correctly and to my teacher’s standards.
- What classes did you identify as needing assistance in? I have not had to have assistance with any of my classes.
- What changes have you made (i.e. amount of time, location, campus resources, study strategies, etc.…)? Some changes I have made from the beginning of the semester is that I take more time to study and understand the material for my classes. I have also started to do more practice problems for my chemistry class to better understand how to do the problems.
Transition to College:
- What expectations did you have coming to college? When coming to college, I expected to make friends, experience new things, and learn something new every day.
- Have those expectations come to fruition, or not? Yes, some of those expectations have come to fruition.
- How? The expectations that have come to fruition are making friends and learning something new every day. Those expectations have come to fruition because I have made many new friends and I do learn something new every day.
- In what way is your college experience different from what you expected? My college experience is different from what I expected because I did not expect to miss home so much. I also did not expect the workload to be so much. I knew I would miss home, but I did not know I would miss it as much as I do. Furthermore, as far as the workload, I also knew college would not be easy and I would have a lot of work; I just expected to have more time to get my work done and for the work to be more spaced out.
- What has surprised you about your experiences so far this semester? Something that has surprised me about my experiences so far is that mostly everyone I meet is nice and helpful. I did not know how people would act before I came to college, and I thought I would have a bad experience making friends, but surprisingly I did not.
- If you live on campus: What has been your toughest challenge with moving away to college? Easiest challenge to overcome? The toughest challenge with moving away to college is missing my family and feeling like I am missing out on their lives while being at college. I have had to deal with missing my family since I got to college, and it has been a challenge every day. Furthermore, the easiest challenge to overcome was finding my classes. When I got to college, I thought it would be so hard to find my classes, but it was very easy.
- OR if you commute to class: What is the toughest challenge with commuting to campus? Easiest challenge to overcome? I do not commute to class.
Major:
- Name something you have learned about your intended major that you did not know at the beginning of the semester. Something I have learned about my intended major is that the nursing program only accepts a certain number of students, so it is a very competitive major and that the nursing school is at Virginia Beach.
- Have your feelings changed about your intended major? List some thoughts you are having. I would not say my feelings have changed about my intended major because I still want to continue to the nursing program and become a nurse. I am just very nervous about not getting accepted and am scared of what will happen if I do not get accepted.
- Is there another subject (major or minor) that you are interested in learning more about? Another subject I am interested in learning more about is public health. I am interested in learning more about public health because it seems like a good parallel plan to have if I do not get into the nursing program.
Connecting to Campus:
- Name one problem or challenge you have encountered this semester, and which resource(s) at ODU you have/can utilize to assist with this situation. One problem I have encountered this semester is that the scanner thing in the laundry room only works in one of the laundry rooms. A resource I can utilize to assist with this situation is the QR code that is pictured in the laundry room that you can scan to report a problem. I also can talk to my RA about getting the scanner fixed.
- Is there a friend, roommate, professor, advisor, or group in the ODU community who has helped you so far this semester? If so, how did they help you? Yes, some of the friends I have made have helped me with the semester so far. Since I am in the learning community, I have classes with mostly the same people, and I have made friends with many girls who are in my classes. They have helped me understand some of the work we have been doing in our classes and they help me enjoy my classes more. Furthermore, my academic advisor has also helped me because when I meet with her to talk about my classes and how I am doing so far, she helped me get all the questions I had about classes answered.
- Have you attended an interest meeting for a club? Why did you decide to get involved or not get involved? No, I have not attended any interest meetings for a club. I have joined the SNA club, but I have not been able to attend any meetings or activities because they have all been held at the nursing school at Virginia Beach and my class schedule hindered me from going to them.
