STEP 1: EVALUATE YOUR STUDY HABITS
- Describe your current methods of study. How do you study for each class?
For my World religion class, I use flash cards and write down each major term and definition to help me better understand the religion. I also go to our lecture slides and take notes and review them. For my chemistry class, I take notes from the lecture slides and listen to the lectures. I also use flash also to help me with anything I need to go back and review that I am having trouble with. For my interpreting the American past class, I take notes and review the lecture slides and also write down important information. For sociology I take all my notes then go onto connect.com and read the chapter in the textbook. After I read the chapter the textbook, I take the practice quiz. After all of that I go back and re read my notes and then at the end of chapters I do the exam review for the quiz.
-
- What specific techniques do you use in class?
In all my classes I use the provided power points to take written notes and then during class I take lecture notes while my professors are going over particular topics. While my professors are going over the specific topics, I write down additional notes to help me gain a better understand the topic.
-
- What specific techniques do you use outside of class?
Outside of the classroom I make quizlets to organize the flashcards, so then I can test my knowledge. I also make practice test and do practice worksheets that some of my professors provide just to make sure I understand the material. I do have people I can contact if I want to study with, but we haven’t made a study group yet.
- Identify one class in which you are doing well (not HLTH 101). What study methods work best and why?
I am currently doing well in my sociology class. I got a 96 on my first quiz and I believe it’s because of my study habits for this class. I am taking notes, but then going back and reading the chapters in the textbook and take the practice quizzes and also doing the reviews. This is allowing me to do well in this course because I am taking so much time to study and review in this course.
STEP 2: IDENTIFY AND APPLY NEW LEARNING TECHNIQUES
- Identify one class where you are experiencing challenges and address the following questions.
I am currently not doing well in my Interpreting the American past class. On paper my grades look fine, but we have our first exam coming up and I don’t think I am going to get a good grade on it. For this class I take notes and review the lecture slides and also write down important information to try to best retain the information. I’m going to be honest I think I’m also having a hard time being motivated to study for this class and that’s why it’s hard for me to study. It’s just not working for me and I don’t know if I need to spend extra time in this class, but I plan on spending 3 hours studying. I also plan on creating a study group for this course to help me. Its stressing me out and I just feel overwhelmed and I just need to find other ways to be successful for this class just like I’m being successful in my other classes.
- Review at least 5 academic tips/resources listed here: https://www.odu.edu/success/academic/tips What is one new technique you could try in class to help you better understand the material? I could try to get online tutoring to help me with the classes that I am struggling with.
The tutoring would help me a lot and I would be better prepared for my exams. I would be helping myself out in the long run and would probably stop stressing out about how difficult the material is in my class.
- What is one new technique you could try outside of class to help you better understand the material?
I could try to form a study group and start studying with the people in the group and create worksheets. By creating a study group, it will help us better understand the material and give us people to study with whenever we don’t understand the material. In addition, the study groups will give us an opportunity to plan out when we are going to study, so that when exam comes, we will be ready.
