- What did you expect college would be like 14 weeks ago?
14 weeks ago, I thought college would be fun and simple. Turn out I was completely wrong because these last 10 weeks have been nothing but challenging and stressful. I knew that there was going to be a lot of work, but I was not prepared for it. I didn’t think I would be choosing between sleep or homework but, I was.
- What is something you wish you knew 14 weeks ago?
I wish I would’ve known not to stress out so much and, on those days, where you have time to get out and hang with friends. I have consumed so much of my time with schoolwork that I would be stressed all the time and overwhelmed. I wish I would’ve known it’s okay to not do schoolwork all the time and to prioritize it with your personal life.
- What is a resource or activity you have found helpful this semester?
I have found the library very helpful this semester. When it came to my Interpreting the American past class, I had to write a paper and need to find primary sources and the library and Monarch one search helped me out a lot for finding those sourcing to include in my paper. I am currently using the library again for my research paper in my World religions class and it has helped out a lot.
- What is a resource or activity you have found unhelpful this semester?
The writing center was unhelpful this semester. It was unhelpful because I didn’t really have to use It because I didn’t have to take a English course so there was no need for me to use that resource. It might be helpful to me next year, but as of now it was not helpful with me achieving success this semester.
- Name something you have learned this semester that will assist you next semester.
I have learned to do work early way before the due date. So that when the work is do, I’m not stressing and that I can spend time with family and friends. Additionally, if I complete my work early it allows me to study for my upcoming test or quizzes that I may have.
- Study Habits
How much time do you spend studying for each class now vs. at the beginning of the semester? How have your study habits changes?
Currently I spend 5 hours typically for my World religions class, Interpreting the American Past, Sociology, and Chemistry. At the beginning of the semester I would only spend 3 hours studying for these class. I learned that I needed to start spending more time studying for my classes if I want to get a A in them. Additionally, appending more time studying helps me better understand the material.
What specific study techniques do you think work best for you? How do these vary from class to class?
For my World religion class, I use flash cards and write down each major term and definition to help me better understand the religion. I also go to our lecture slides and take notes and review them. For my chemistry class, I take notes from the lecture slides and listen to the lectures. I also use flash also to help me with anything I need to go back and review that I am having trouble with. For my interpreting the American past class, I take notes and review the lecture slides and also write down important information. For sociology I take all my notes then go onto connect.com and read the chapter in the textbook. After I read the chapter the textbook, I take the practice quiz. After all of that I go back and re read my notes and then at the end of chapters I do the exam review for the quiz.
- Health Professions Learning Community
This semester you were enrolled in at least SOC 201S, and HLTH 101. Many of you were also enrolled in CHEM 105N and CHEM 106N, and some of you were enrolled in HIST 104H with Professor White.
- On the surface these classes do not appear to be connected however this semester each professor was intentional about drawing connections between content, and subjects discussed. Discuss the ways in which these courses are tied together.
Both SOC 201S and HIST 104H depend upon each other and can influence one another. Sociology depends upon History in order to study past events and situations. History of cultures and institutions is helpful in the understanding of sociology and on the collections of materials. In order to understand the past society and activities, we have to take the help of History. Sociology concerned with the study of the historical development of human society. It studies ancient customs, modes of living, various stages of life and past social institutions through the historical analysis.
- This semester we provided events (Health Chats) for you to hear from health professionals from ODU.
Which Health Chat was most beneficial for you as a student, and why?
The nursing professions panel was most beneficial to me because I got to hear what inspired nursing professionals to get into the nursing field at ODU. I got to hear their experiences of what they go through and what their daily lives are like being in the medical field. The nursing panelist also told us how COVID is affecting their nursing experiences. Overall the nursing professions panel health chat was just so amazing because it just shows how each one of the panelists has a passion for what they do, and it inspires me to be able to fulfill my dream one day and become a nurse.
