Pre-Semester Reflection

  1. Major/Career
    1. What is your intended major and why did you choose this major?

 My intended major is nursing, and I choose this major because I want to help people out when they are in need.

  1. What skills or abilities do you possess that make this major/career a good choice for you?

I possess good communication skills. In addition, I possess good critical thinking skills and time management skills. These skills are just some of the skills needed in the nursing field. 

  1. What experience, if any, do you have that relates to your chosen major/career?

 I do not have any experience in this field but, I do plan on volunteering at a local hospital.

  1. In what type of setting would you prefer to work?

I prefer to work in a big hospital during any time where there are a lot of patients that need help.

  1. What are your career goals (in 5 years/in 10 years)?

 My career goals are to become a pediatric Nurse Practitioner and then go back to school to get my master’s degree.

I would like to learn more about healthcare administration.

  1. Transition to college
    1. What do you expect to be the biggest difference between high school and college?

I expect the biggest difference to be between high school and college is the workload.

  1. What do you expect to be your biggest challenge this semester?

I expect my biggest challenge is to not stress when I have multiple assignments that are all due around the same time.

  1. If you live on campus: What do you expect to be your biggest challenge with moving away to college?
  2. OR  If you commute to class: What do you expect to be your biggest challenge with commuting to campus?

 I expect my biggest challenge to be making sure I get to class on time, which means leaving my house at a good time just in case there is traffic.

  1. Do you have a job/ or plan to get a job? If so, where? How many hours will you be working per week?

 I do not plan on getting a job while I’m in school.

  1. Study habits
    1. Is there a difference between “studying” and “homework”?  Explain your answer.

Yes there is a difference between studying and homework. When you are studying you are focused on specific topics and reviewing material so you can be tested on it to make sure you know what it is about. While when you’re doing homework, you are just completing and assignment that helps you better understand the subject or topic.

  1. How much time do you plan to spend studying for each class every week?

I plan on spending 2 ½ hours studying for each class.

  1. For which class do you expect to spend the most time studying?
    1.  I spend the most time studying for world religions.

For which class (other than HLTH 101) are you expecting to spend the least amount of time studying?

 None I plan on studying for all my classes and giving the same amount of time for each.

  1. Where do you plan to study?
    1. What potential distractions can you anticipate?

 I anticipate wanting to hang out with my friends as a potential distraction even when I know I need to be studying.

  1. How do you plan to avoid these distractions?

 I plan to just be straight forward and let them know I can’t hang out.

  1. What time of day is your best time to study and why?

 For me the morning is the best time for me to study because I feel like I’m more energized.

  1. This Fall, you are in online courses, some of which do not meet at a specific time, how do you plan to manage all of your assignments?

 I plan on managing my assignments by writing them down in a planner and on my calendar.

  1. Think about all of your commitments i.e. job, family, social life (from a distance and wear your mask! #ReignResponsibly). How do you plan on balancing your various commitments?

 I plan on balancing them by allowing myself to get all my schoolwork done first them have a social life after the work is done.

  1. Learning style
    1. What specific study techniques do you think work best for you?

  I think having flashcards, highlighting, and writing down the important information works for me.

  1. Do you use different study techniques for different classes?  Provide examples.

 No, I use the same techniques for each class.

  1. Connecting to campus
    1. Name one academic resource at ODU you can use to help you earn “As” this semester.

 The math and science resource center I can use to help me earn A’s this semester.

  1. Name one non-academic resource at ODU and how it can help you this semester.

The financial aid resource can help me this semester and next semester.

  1. Name one resource you think you will use this semester.

 I think I will use the Perry library this semester.

  1. Name one resource at ODU you would like to learn more about, and why.

I would like to learn about the tutoring resource because I think it would help me out a lot. 

  1. In high school, what clubs, organizations, or activities did you participate in, if any?

I participated in Fellowship of Christian athlete’s club and was on the varsity soccer team.

  1. Is there a club or organization you plan to join this semester and what do you expect to gain from this experience?  If not, why not?

I do not plan on joining a club this semester, but maybe next semester.
