Genetics 294
Gene Expression Diagram (Critical Reading #2)

Instructions
• Figure 13.1 in your textbook is a global picture of gene expression. Your diagram could start here,
but I think that the figure shown below is a better diagram to get you started.
• Include information from Figures 13.9 and 13.10
• Since you are asked to show gene expression for eukaryotes, include the three post-
transcriptional processing steps. These are shown in Figure 13.11.
• Figures 14.6, 14.7, and 14.8 have important information for showing translation. Remember that
you are showing translation for eukaryotes.
• Use information from your textbook and powerpoints to include as much detail as possible.
• You should be able to come up with 25 features.
• After you have finished your drawing, take a photo of it and post it on Canvas.
Writing Assignment #4

You are to find a genetics-related article from a newspaper or magazine, and write a summary of that
article. In your summary include supporting information from at least one scientific review article to
support whether you think the popular press information is accurate or not accurate. Your assignment
should include the proper citation for the paper you are summarizing (APA format-see below*), as well as
the article(s) you use to support the credibility of the “popular press” article (Nature format).
Instructions for the Nature citation format can be found in Writing Assignment #3.
Choose a genetics-related article from a local newspaper such as The Virginian Pilot, a more national
newspaper like The Washington Post, or a magazine (not a science magazine). The article must have been
printed since January 11, 2025. You may use the Internet to search for articles (e.g., pilotonline.com,
washingtonpost.com), but an Internet source or site itself (e.g., NIH or American Cancer Society) is not
acceptable
