Written Assignment 1
A primary article is an article that consists original scientific reports of research findings.
They predominantly use data that the author conducts themselves and usually include the
sections of a research report. These sections include an introduction, methodology, data/results,
discussion, and references. These articles are usually peer-reviewed by experts within the field
and then gets published once experts determined that it is ready to be published.
A review article typically summarizes the research literature on a particular subject. They
are interpretations of the original research of the primary research article. These sources can be
books or review articles. They can also be articles that organize and analyze the research of other
people’s original work on a topic.
The scientific review process is a system of peer review that is used to assess the quality
of a research article. The article is usually submitted to a journal who then selects potential
experts in a field to peer review the article. Usually, the paper goes through different types of
peer review and several different experts before a decision is made. After the reviewers go
through the work, the author can make revisions that the reviewers commented on. After final
revisions are made, the article is either accepted and published or rejected and the author has to
start over.
In terms of which one is a primary or review article, Permanent Inactivation of
Huntington’s Disease mutation is the primary article while Huntington’s Disease Mechanisms is
the review article. Permanent Inactivation of Huntington’s Disease mutation has the structure of
a primary article since it displays data that was conducted by the author as well as it being a
“proof-of-principle” experiment. The other paper analyzes experiments that other researchers
have done as well it not being in the structure of a primary research article thus making the other
paper the review article.
