Assignment 3 was a very special assignment for me. I did it while I was in Richmond visiting my friend and the topic was so consuming I ended up ranting and talking about Michael Richards’ behavior, then taking about intent and racism as a whole. I have been made aware of racism since I was very young when I befriended someone who was biracial. Members of my family often made conversations about this one aspect of my friend, and I remember being very confused. However, I did not know enough about racism, specifically modern racism at that age. It was not until I took Sociology and Human Services classes that I realized how big and overwhelming racism is in our present day society.
The question asked in Assignment 3 was a very good question: was Michael Richards’ used of racial slurs in an outburst during a comedy set backed by racist intentions or merely bitter attempts at reclaiming attention. In my assignment, I found that he may not have had racist motive, however, thee afterglow of his actions will paint him a racist. When someone drinks and drives, they don’t intend on killing or injuring anyone, yet when they do, they are still charged and held accountable for their actions. The same has, and rightfully should, happen with Michael Richards.
The visual reputation I chose is the cover of a very impactful book I read in human services called Evicted. I believe this book spoke to the subtle ways of modern racism and how it is still present.
