Parallel Major

My parallel major would be nursing, and if I were to follow this path I would pursue a bachelors degree in nursing through the pre-licensure program here at ODU. The nursing major is still in the health field which has been the focus of the career area that I wanted. It also leads into hands on involvement when completed which I prefer. The main reason why I chose nursing as my parallel major, is because the main goal between dental hygiene and nursing is to help people. I still would like to help people directly, even if it is in a different way. When you get a degree in nursing, there is room for further studying and advancement in your career. Also there are multiple fields of nursing that one could enter. And since there are many career paths with a degree in nursing, I would like to focus on being an oncology or hospice nurse. With these two possibilities, I will be able to interact with patients directly and frequently in hopes to brighten their days while they go through many life challenges. The prerequisites for nursing are similar to those of dental hygiene, I would only have to add two more courses into my schedule, one being a philosophy class and the other being a lifespan development psychology class. I would also have to do some hours of shadowing a health field professional. To further inform myself about possible career paths in nursing and the field itself, I could shadow nurses at the local hospital or interview a hospice or oncology nurse. Since nursing is in the College of Health Sciences, I will be able to keep my current academic adviser.
