In Blog One, I discussed how my initial expectation for this course was to be able to apply the various concepts in my community as well as in my future occupation. In addition, I mentioned how I wanted to gain understanding regarding individual’s behaviors and how it may impact their world. As it pertains to the course objectives, I think I acquired a good amount of knowledge for each of them. Furthermore, when starting this class, I didn’t have much knowledge about the science of Social Psychology. However, since developing an open mind around the subject, I’m able to point out concepts that were taught in class. If I took this class again, I would complete more of the activities in the modules. By doing this, it would give me more resources to complete my “Top Artifacts” page.
To continue, one way I have grown academically, is learning how to develop better study habits throughout my courses. Lastly, a skill that I’ve gained from this course that I can utilize in my professional life is avoiding social exclusion in the workplace. When it comes to building friendships in the workplace, it is easy to connect with individuals who are on the same team. To refrain from coworkers feeling isolated, I can make it a habit to include or mention their name in activities the company puts together. In brief, before entering the course, I didn’t know what heuristics were. As a result, I chose this image due to showing my understanding of the four heuristics in Social Psychology.

As it pertains to what I have learned so far in this course, I would have to choose the ability to read non-verbal cues, behavior occurrence, along with attitudes. When it comes to verbal cues, I am able to acknowledge when someone or myself are demonstrating micro-expressions towards another person. Another key concept that I learned and can apply to my life are the three types of information to look for when trying to understand why a behavior takes place. With the three being consistency, consensus, and distinctiveness, I am able to remember them when trying to establish a new friendship or simply become aware of if I display the good qualities of these types. Lastly, as it relates to attitude, I have learned about how explicit and implicit attitudes are different. When it comes to explicit behaviors, we are able to control and report them. However, implicit attitudes are less controllable and faster when having to pair to ideas together.
One concept that I discussed in my eighth blog post was listing examples of how men and women may annoy one another. One example I chose was men upsetting a woman by not listening to what she is saying. To follow, I would apply this blog post to my first top artifact. In this section, I asked people whether they thought similarities lead to attraction or do opposites attract. It is interesting to see how in my blog post two people can be in an argument with one another and share similar characteristics in their nature. In brief, one concept that I can connect to this, and one other course is the theory of correspondent inference. As it relates to my philosophy course, I learned about the philosopher, Susan Wendell, who became disabled in the middle of her life. I would relate Wendell to the correspondent inference theory due to the fact that when her body started to display signs of her disability, individuals around her began to think that she was unusual. This resulted in them changing their attitude towards her. I chose the following digital image because it displays the list of topics, I enjoyed learning and wanted to cover in this blog post.

After reading the mating article, I was shocked to read how some men and women view the relational market. Men, in this case, may desire a woman to see how many potential partners he can obtain in a certain amount of time. On the other hand, women choose their potential partner based on the lessons they learned in their previous relationships. Furthermore, with establishing a relationship and/or separating from one, it is inevitable that men and women won’t become upset with their partner. One example in which a man can upset a woman is by not listening. This may be seen when the woman constantly tells her significant other to put the toilet seat down and he doesn’t. Another example of how some women become annoyed by a man is his lack of accountability. By him not taking responsibility for his actions, it may lead the woman to feel like she is to blame for all that happened in an argument. However, men become upset with a woman when she continuously nags about something. As it relates to the example with the toilet seat up, a man may become frustrated by the topic being constantly brought to the surface. Another instance in which a man may become angry with his significant other is by not performing the normal wife duties. This may upset him due to having an expectation in his mind of what the role of a wife should look like in a household. In brief, I chose each of the images due to them representing how men and women may upset one another in a relationship.

When it comes to the relationship between Self- Regulation and Emotional Intelligence, one can’t be without the other. Self- Regulation is the emotional response individuals use when responding to any situation in their life. The main psychological response individuals use is the fight-flight-or-freeze reaction. Subconsciously, these responses occur when a person feels they are in a threating position. Equally important, emotional intelligence is taking the time to understand how you can control emotional responses when various circumstances arise. This helps individuals make the best decision on how to react. To follow, as it relates to emotional intelligence, I would define it as being aware of your own emotions and knowing how to use those emotion to get through a situation instead of it going through you. In brief, when I’m stress or anxious, I use the 4-4-8 breathing exercise in order to calm myself down. By doing this it helps me regulate my emotional responses, practice mindfulness, as well as allowing me to keep things in perspective. I chose to complete the “GlobaLeadership Foundation” EQ test, which displayed accurate scores of how I perceive and manage my emotions.

After watching the “The Dangerous Ways Ads See Women” Ted Talk, it was interesting to see the different advertisements, through history, that exploited women and their physical image. Prior to viewing the presentation, I have noticed a couple of makeup ads that have distorted African American women by making their skin look lighter than their complexion. This gave off the image that women in the black community are wanted to be seen as white. As it relates to the Ted Talk, the different gender representations are viewed through the lens of the various social media platforms, television shows as well as movies.
Furthermore, the “Ashley Madison” advertisement was a webpage that supported men cheating on their wives if they weren’t satisfied. The poster presented two women of different sizes, with a check mark beside the smaller woman. When it comes to the woman who appears to be a larger size, she is seen as someone who no one would want to partake in intercourse with. When it comes to the Ted Talk, the ad affects the way women of a larger size view their own bodies. The second advertisement compares a woman’s body to capturing whales. As it relates to the Ted Talk, the ad insults women who may have more than the desire amount of body fat. To follow, the third advertisement displays the celebrity, Katy Perry, lifting pop chips with a title of “love. Without the handles.” In relation to the video, it gives off the idea that it only takes eating those particular chips to achieve the “ideal body.” Similar to the first advertisement, the fourth ad insults larger woman for wanting to be beautiful. In addition, it displays women of a larger size as an object to men. The last advertisement shows women of different skin complexions with the errorless body image. With this commercial, it may place insecurities in women who may not be the same size. It may also cause teenage girls to strive for the same flawless image. In brief, through the numerous ads, it exhibits how an image can be so powerful in regard to defining how males and females are to present themselves in society.

Communicator Credibility and Attractiveness
A Credible Source:

The following advertisement shows a female doctor explaining the benefits of using Sensodyne toothpaste. This ad would be seen as a credible source due to the doctor representing a form of expertise in the field of dentistry. By you all being able to see the uniform she has on as well as her credentials beside her, it is easier to trust the recommendation she is providing. To continue, this source would also be stated as credible because in the photo, it is stated to be the brand that dentist suggests for those who experience discomfort when brushing their teeth.
Non-Credible Source:

The advertisement above shows model and media influencer, Khloe Kardashian promoting the use of a “Flat Tummy” brand shake. Though she may be seen as credible due to her notoriety, this ad wouldn’t be seen as a reliable source because she is already known for having an “ideal body.” To follow, it is easy to assume that Khloe is only encouraging her fans to use it for personal stakes. By seeking personal financial gain, she loses credibility from those who “look up” to her on a daily basis.
Attractive Source:

When it comes to the “Sweetie’s McDonalds Meal” advertisement, I found it to be very effective. By being someone who doesn’t eat McDonalds but listens to the music she produces, I was eager to try it when it came out. Moreover, this ad is considered an attractive source due to the liking Sweetie’s fans have of her. With this likability, she is able to gain her fans attention to look into the meal she is endorsing.

With completing the first exam in the Social Psychology course, I am in the process of learning how to pace myself when it comes to studying the material for the course. Through the notes and the jeopardy sessions completed in class, I am able to reread the information and gain a better understanding. To follow, in order to retain the content quicker, I try to remember to apply the concepts to my life. This feedback will help me, by keeping up with the consistency of what is being done currently. Specifically, I think reviewing the activity that is done in the classroom, over the week will assist me in preforming well on future test. In brief, I chose my digital notes of the second chapter content because it is one that challenged me on how to relate the concepts to my daily life.

When it comes to music and relationships, I do think that people have to share somewhat similar interest in music. This can lead to a better connection between all parties in the relationship. However, having interest in different music may allow for one individual to get to know the other person on a deeper level. As it pertains to music and the relational attractions in my life, my friends and I have different taste in music. However, a couple of music genres that we prefer are R&B, Gospel, or Hip Hop. In brief, through the various artists we all enjoy, we get to learn more about one another, obtain new music artists to listen to, along with keeping our belief system and values intact.
To continue, the first key person I would like to mention is my mom. The song I associate with her is “Good Woman Down” by Mary J. Blige. I make this connection due to my mother showing my siblings and I that we can get through whatever life throws at us. This song represents the strength and power my mother has as a black woman. The next person I would like to speak on is one of my best friends, Lauren. The song I associate with her is “Take Me As I Am” by Mary J. Blige. By loving to express herself in different ways, this song represents Lauren because she always manages to stick to who she is as a person. Through our friendship she has always taught me that “if someone can’t except you for who you are, they are not for you.” In addition, another key person in my life is my best friend, Mckenzi. The song I would associate with her is “Dior” by Pop Smoke. I chose this song because this is not only one of our favorite songs together, but it also illustrates Mckenzi’s extroverted personality. To follow, the next person I would like to incorporate is my best friend, Wynter. The song I would associate with her is “Energy” by Tyla Jane. I selected this song for her because she has made it her mission to become her best self. The last key person I would like to mention is myself. The song I would associate with myself is “Public Service Announcement” by Jay-Z. With placing my own traits in the lyrics, this song symbolizes the type of person I am developing into as time passes. In brief, the song I chose to represent my outlook on life is “Mary did you know?” by Maverick City Music. I chose this song because it speaks on the story and significance of who I believe in, as well as, pulling the greatness out of every person.

I believe that I am a dedicated hardworking student. However, I do think that having this drive can get the best of me sometimes. I say this due to the fact that I often feel drained after completing multiple assignments without giving myself a break. By doing this, it leads to me not completing any assignment, whether at school or in my personal life, to my full capability. As seen in the “General Self-Efficacy” Scale, my current level of confidence is a thirty-four. To follow, factors I think that would increase my current confidence level, would be slowing down and seeking another way to accomplish the outcome desired. As it relates to getting a task completed, majority of my results lie between the “Moderately true” and “Exactly true” ranking. For example, one of the questions stated, “it is easy for me to stick to my aims and accomplish my goals.” I placed a three for this statement because when I get in a wearied state, it is hard for me to get back in the focused mode.

I chose this image because it represents me in an academic setting completing an assignment. It also shows my results from the General Self-Efficacy scale.

When reading the course objectives, the first outcome that will be beneficial for me to know in the future is understanding the experiments that were conducted by social psychologists. By performing research, they were able to gain knowledge about the underlying actions of a person or a large gathering of people. To continue, learning about the various procedures that were carried out by psychologist, will allow me to tie in and remember the academic terms studied in the content for future psychology courses. For example, when learning about heuristics, researchers performed an experiment to test the Status Quo Heuristic. In the experiment, participants were asked to taste a piece of the same kind of chocolate. However, what they didn’t know was that the two pieces of candy were sold in different time frames. As a result, the participants stated the chocolate sold in the 1900’s tasted better than the chocolate sold in the 2000’s (Baron & Branscombe, n.d.). This study represents how some individuals will stick with what they know instead of taking heed to different choices. In brief, reading about this research will help me recognize when a specific heuristic is being used and how it applies to the information in future psychology courses.
Furthermore, the next outcome that will be valuable in the future is learning the ways individuals become conscious and comprehend the ways of people around them. By grasping a hold of this objective, it will help me understand the reason in which people interact with those around them. Another outcome that may correlate with this objective is being able to communicate how an individual’s perspective will surface and may shift due to a particular circumstance. In addition, by becoming aware of these objectives, it allows me to become mindful of some of the reasons I perform a behavior in specific settings.
Moreover, an expectation I have for this course is to gain the necessary tools to apply to my future career and the world around me. I hope to gain new information about an individual’s behavior and how it affects their daily life. In addition, strategies I plan to implement to be successful in this course is creating and sticking to a schedule, asking for assistance, and making every effort to relate and apply the content back to my life. By establishing a system to accomplish each task, it will keep me on track to the end goal. Along with asking questions when needed will help me comprehend the material better. In brief, applying the information to my everyday life will allow me to focus on obtaining the objectives of the course.

I selected this image to display a portion of the notes I have for chapter one of the content. In these notes it explains what social psychology is, the areas it encompasses, and the various viewpoints that were developed during the upbringing of the science. I chose the chapter one notes due to it showing the foundation of the necessary terms and knowledge I needed to continue understanding the material throughout the course.
