Advanced Digital Forensics
Advanced Digital Forensics provided an overview of forensic techniques as applicable in the Business environment. Some topics discussed included social and psychological profiling, system design, case construction, report development, investigation techniques, and forensic teamwork.
For the final project for this class, students were required to submit a research paper relevevant to the area of digital forensics. For my paper, I chose to research and highlight how digital devices and the internet are used to facilitate sexual related crimes. Topics discussed in this paper included, sexual harrasment, sexual crimes against minors, and law enforcement actions to mitigate this problem. In our current society, digital devices are used for a lot of everyday uses, and crimes are no exception. Digital Forensics play an important part in the investigative process for these sex crimes and help bring online predators the forefront. As one of my focuses during undergraduate program was cybersecurity in relation to legal and ethical problems, I took a particular interest in this topic. Feel free to give it a read!
Course Reflection
This course was thoroughly enjoyed. There were two concepts covered in the course that were tied into each other. Digital Forensics and Principles of Fraud based on Joseph T. Wells. The contents of the course forced students to really think about their responses to class discussions and other projects. The most enjoyable part for me was that I got to question people’s ethical thinking in response to the discussion prompts and the topic for my term paper above. Compared to the digital forensics class I’ve taken in the past this was definitely a different experience. In my opinion, this was because the focus was less on operations of digital forensics, computer extractions etc, and more on why people commit actions that will eventually lead to a digital forensic investigation. My experience of this course was a great one.
