When I was applying for college at ODU, I had a difficult time deciding on what I would want to major in. After numerous hours of research and talking with other current college students, I had come to the conclusion that I would be most happy and interested in something that had to do with technology; so my top two choices were to study either cybersecurity or computer science. I had decided to go with computer science, but after learning more details about the major, I switched to cybersecurity because I thought it would be more fitting for me. I am interested in cybersecurity technology because I am interested in learning about the how’s, the why’s, the what’s, etc. on the protection of computer systems and networks from cyber criminals/hackers and their attacks. Probably the biggest reason for me choosing cybersecurity is that I’ve always been curious about hacking and how it works, although this course will be more focused about how to protect against any attacks. While researching majors that deal with technology I had noticed that there were other majors that were similar and related to cybersecurity offered here at ODU. Computer science is similar in that it deals with the hardware and software of computers, but computer science is more so a study about the actual computer and its programming languages; cybersecurity is actually classified as a subfield of computer science. Computer engineering deals with designing and testing the hardware aspects of computers. Database administration (Information systems and technology) deals with testing, changing, and/or administering computer databases. Lastly, network Engineering (Information systems and technology) is another major related to cybersecurity. This field studies the management, design, and administration of networks of computers. These many different majors made it very difficult in making my decision due to all of them being related.
