Now that we are using computers for everything like banking and online shopping, this requires an individual’s personal information to be stored electronically. Some of this personal information may include an individual’s address, banking information, contact information, and all types of sensitive data that all people would want to keep confidential. However, when storing certain, electronic information about individuals, this could bring along many different ethical issues. A major ethical issue is that electronically storing someone’s personal information can pose a threat to the individual’s right to privacy. Without proper security measures in place, personal information can be accessed by unauthorized persons. Another ethical issue is caused by data/security breaches. Security breaches occur when unauthorized individuals gain access to personal information that is stored electronically. This can lead to identity theft, financial loss, and other issues for the individuals whose information was stolen. Another ethical issue that arises is caused by system implementation. This can cause issues if the system is not kept up with and causes the quality of the system to decline. Lastly, misuse of an individual’s information is another issue that can arise due when storing electronic information. It is important that organizations put in strong security measures to ensure that stored data is only accessed by authorized personnel.
Since we are moving in the direction of the digital world, the cyber attack numbers are projected to increase. Cyber threats/risks such as hacking, phishing, and/or malware happen in almost every country in the world. However, cybersecurity risks can vary depending on a person’s location in the world. For instance, the United States is the most targeted country when it comes to cyber attacks. Unsurprisingly, compared to all other countries, America’s cybersecurity risk is much higher than everyone else. From cyber crime alone, the United States lost 6.9 billion dollars in the year 2021. China takes the second place for being the second most targeted country by cyber criminals. This is ironic, since forty-one percent of the cyber attacks originate from China.
