Assignment 5 Takeaway
For this last assignment, I decided to write about a peer-reviewed journal related to Ch 7. Health (CH.11 in the textbook) and Haiti is the country I would like to visit. Learned about childhood maltreatment of Haitian adults based on physical abuse, emotional abuse, and depression. This topic is important to me because childhood maltreatment is not okay regardless of age and race. The peer-reviewed article is relevant to the chapter topic on the section cultural discrepancies and physical health. Within the section of the chapter talked about depression, physical, and well-being. Also, relate this subject to my other class CHP 425 because I learned about physical health and maltreatment of older adults even though the age group is different. Overall, there will always be similarities and differences between another culture and American culture when it comes to describing health.
I choose this picture because it represents Haiti, the country I would like to visit one day.
Assignment Takeaway 3
This assignment required me to look at other student’s blogs on their experiences of studying abroad. The theme in the student blog talked about women reproductive health rights in Accra, Ghana. Learned that Ghana is still a patriarchal society where men have power over women’s decisions in health and everyday life. This topic is relevant to me because of men having power over females but not as much today. I can relate this topic to some of my CHP classes that talked about reproductive health rights. Also, I would like to travel to Accra, Ghana and talk to people about their perspective on this issue. Overall, studying abroad allows students to experience different cultures and reflect on what they have learned.
I choose this picture because it represents Ghana’s culture of arts and crafts.
Assignment Takeaway 2
For this assignment, I described how the value of time and its controls affect my everyday life. Time is essential for attaining goals in personal life, at work, and at school. Learned that other cultures value interpersonal relationships and time is not important to them. This assignment is relevant to me because time keeps me on track throughout the week for the tasks that need to be completed. In high school, did multiple activities such as marching band, cheerleading, and gymnastics that kept me busy during the school week on a schedule. I can apply this topic to college by writing my six class schedules on a calendar to visually see how much time I have to complete the assignments. Also, wear my watch every day to keep up with time at school and doctor appointments. Overall, value has different meanings in different cultures compared to Americans due to key factors.
I choose the picture of my watch because it represents telling time not just a fashion item.
Assignment Takeaway 1
In assignment one, I described how stage four acceptance of difference in intercultural sensitivity represents me. Acceptance of difference is how we view culture from a different perspective. I learned that it is okay to have a different opinion without being prejudice towards another person. The assignment is relevant to me because I enjoy learning about other people backgrounds whether it is reading a book or looking up information on the Internet. In some of my classes, I can apply this topic to my African American class AAST 420 and Management classes. Also, traveling to other countries as I did with the ODU Monarch Marching Band trip to Ireland in the spring semester of 2016. Overall, intercultural sensitivity is important because it is the way we approach other people about their culture.
I choose this picture because it represents new experiences with ODU Monarch Marching Band to Ireland in spring 2016 to learn about the culture.
