Sociology 320: Social Inequality is about how we measure social inequality, its role in society, and how it is produced and maintained. Inequality varies based on different social criteria such as race, gender, and class. Sociology examines the influence and culture on individuals, the way society organizations itself and is influenced by the power of dynamics, and the social construction of reality.  This course helped me think critically as I evaluate the social world. There were two writing assignments: the first was social class and social mobility and the second was thinking about race/gender in social institutions. For writing assignment one I had to complete a chart that listed the quintiles top fifth, upper middle, middle, lower middle, and bottom fifth and had to compare what I thought and the actual results. Writing assignment two describes personal experiences with race/gender in a social institution. Overall, was able to think critically for both writing assignments as I reflected on my own experiences and research. There were readings that help with the information from the textbook and class lecture. Four homework assignments on some social inequality topics such as wealth distribution, health care, living in poverty, and critical analysis of white privilege. Health care assignment had to compare which countries spent the most per capita on health expenditures and the U.S.  Poverty assignment was a scenario-based game where I had to make choices as a person living in poverty. The picture above is from one of the additional readings that were required for the class.

Of all the assignments, homework 4: a critical analysis of white privilege had the most significant impact on me. I had to read the article and answer three questions about it. The articles address male privileges and how they overlook black women. Also, view black women as oppressive and in a damaged culture.   One of the key concepts being addressed here is the relationships between race and gender and disadvantages. This assignment opened my eyes to how white people viewed black women. Black and whites are able to coexist now but there is still racism and women still getting paid less than men. Relates to my future profession because I will be competing with others in job opportunities, pay raises, and the way I am viewed to others.
