I am an intern\u00a0at the Center of Global Health at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. The mission statement of the Center is to positively impact health and well-being through collaborations among faculty, students,\u00a0 communities, and other partners. Vision is to improve people’s health and quality of life on a local and global basis leveraging Hampton Roads’ unique strengths in education, research, and outreach. Three goals I hope to achieve in the internship are building relationships with people I work with, apply new skills, and understanding how global health\u00a0and health service administration works together. The first activity I did was volunteering at\u00a0a Homeless Center in Virginia\u00a0Beach, Virginia. I was able to interact with the homeless by listening to their stories, answering any questions, and guiding them to the resource areas in the shelter. The first project to help design a questionnaire for Healthy Chesapeake Food Connection Survey.\u00a0 My preceptor, Michelle Keke, would tell me what websites to use as I look up questionnaire questions. The second project worked on a spreadsheet in\u00a0excel from the survey results and find the frequency as well as create a histogram. Went to a safeTalk training program to learn about the signs of suicide and how to deal with the issues before something bad happens.<\/p>\n

Lastly,\u00a0 the C2C Ghana project on handwashing for the boys and girls in Ghana. The past several weeks I worked on a script for a video for\u00a0C2C Ghana, did a literature\u00a0review on handwashing and infectious diseases, and help create a handwashing game.\u00a0 The picture above shows me doing a video promo for the C2C Ghana project.\u00a0 In the video, I gave some background information about my self, interests in global health, and why I am interested. Also, went to Thinking With A Curious Mind that was sponsored by ODU Center of Global Health. New skills I learned was how to develop a questionnaire, write a literature review, delivering a message in a video, and learned about organizational structure.\u00a0 \u00a0 Reflect on professional development opportunities in which you have participated during your internship by providing a brief description of each opportunity.\u00a0 These opportunities helped me\u00a0understand the importance of global health issues and how they affect the communities. Experiences will help me as I pursue a Masters of Public Health to become a hospital administrator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I have not been able to apply the concepts from my internship yet. I plan to apply some concepts such as organizational structure when I become a hospital administrator. MyNgnoc Nyguen, the program director at the Center of Global Health at Old Dominion University,\u00a0 talked to me about organizational structure\u00a0and how to deal with stressful situations as an administrator. Also, said that I have to be organized, have control over situations, and be a leader.<\/p>\n
