Introduction
There needs to be an enormous amount of management and oversight when working with critical infrastructure and industrial operations. Countries have implemented a system called SCADA, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, allowing constant monitoring overseen by an operator across hundreds of processing units and systems in real-time, handling the communication, security, and data processing of all the systems within a critical infrastructure and industrial operations.
What is SCADA?
SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) is a system that creates a central monitoring access point to oversee the complex computing and processing units over a large number of systems and machine input (What Is SCADA: Complete Guide for Engineers & Managers 2026.). SCADA also creates a form of communication between devices, cyber-world, and human interface. This operating system is very important for the oversight of critical infrastructure, such as transportation, energy, and water/wastewater management, because SCADA is used in each industry to coordinate the units, machines, and devices processing times and databases simultaneously and in unison. This allows smooth communication and detection for all platforms, which is all overseen by human operators to fix, improve, or monitor the devices to register if they have been functioning as intended.
How is SCADA Implemented?
SCADA are four apparatuses that are implemented for critical infrastructure. First, the SCADA system interacts with operating systems, in particular: sensors and machinery, that make direct contact with the progression of an infrastructure. Water management uses these sensors for the SCADA to collect real-time data from the water facilities to detect water pressure and pH levels to determine the safety of water used for the area, locally and nationally. Secondly, SCADA is used to produce databases and monitor the dependability of operations. Using ‘Remote Terminal Units’ (RTUs) and ‘Programmable Logic Controllers’ (PLCs), SCADA can process and implement data into these devices to understand and transfer information that is gathered. The energy industry uses RTUs and PLCs to gather and transfer the data at high speeds of wind turbines and water pumps that generate electricity, so that the amount of energy that is used and gathered can be recorded for future development and to keep records. The third point describes SCADA’s communications as it is the tether between different devices, with wired or wireless connections to transfer data. Transportation uses this between lights, speed cameras, and monitor traffic are all communicating between each other using the SCADA. Lastly, the SCADA is used to interpret the data gathered and communicated towards a human-machine interface (HMI). A human operator uses the data gathered from the SCADA to analyze and find the best fit use for the data. Seen throughout healthcare facilities, employees use data learned on their patients, operating systems, and equipment to determine the best outcome and proceed. All these systems are all interconnected by the SCADA at the center, and important for smooth operations in critical infrastructures in multiple countries.
How are SCADA Systems Related to Cybersecurity?
With how important SCADA systems are to critical infrastructure, it is also needed to be fully aware of any vulnerabilities or risks that may be associated with these systems, especially in cyberspace. One vulnerability that SCADA systems may create is possible exposed networks through new technology. Since not all the SCADA systems are up to date, some systems may be attacked or expose data or interfaces through decoding, protocol or intercepted signals. Another risk that SCADA systems may have could be any system failure in devices due to malware or software corruption. These vulnerabilities can cause a scale of small inflictions to large system failures, especially if it was an intentional cyberattack by another party. This could cost time, resources, and funding hindering society and the industries.
Some strategies to avoid any vital damage to the SCADA systems or any of its components could be creating a more secure and strong authentication when accessing the SCADA systems, so that they are not easily accessible or infiltrated effortlessly. Create a denser protocol with encryptions and securities to create a layer of protection. More constant monitoring may allow for better protection within cyberspace, as someone can identify issues before they develop into critical problems. All these strategies can help improve the cybersecurity of SCADA systems.
Conclusion
As the controller of all these devices, transferring, analyzing, and interpreting data, the SCADA systems are very important to critical infrastructure, and society. This is why it is even more important to keep protected. The communication, processing, and many other uses SCADA systems are used for, the need to keep them up to date, reliable, and efficient, is necessary to run a society as smooth as possible.
