I chose this image because it includes most characteristics of certain things that people value. The words can be cross cultural.
Reading this article was interesting because it put into perspective and summarized American values, along with the opposing cultures values. Although I did not agree with some of the things the article said, some things were spot on. My value I identified with was individualism/privacy. Reflecting on why I chose that value helped me create a definition for my specific values of individualism. My value would of course be different if I was a part of a different culture. After researching more on the opposite value of individualism, I learned more than I already knew about collectivism. Collectivism values togetherness and the well being of the group. In collectivist cultures, privacy does not exist, and is looked down upon.

Before doing this assignment, I did not know there were different classification levels of intercultural sensitivities. It was interesting to learn about the different categories and put myself into one. The assignment also allows me to educate others about the different levels of intercultural sensitivities. Putting myself into a category and reading about the other categories allowed me to see how much I’ve grown regarding acceptance and inclusivity of others around me that may be of different cultures. I was glad to see that the category i’m in resonates how I will perform in my future career. From previous classes in human services, I’ve learned how important it is to be willing to help others no matter how they look or their condition. Going into a field such as psychology, or human services, one must be willing to help people from all walks of life. Working with different cultural backgrounds when one is not familiar with the culture and how it works, or not being open to working with different cultures can cause problems for the client and the person who is trying to help (a psychologist or human services practitioner).
