A profession in digital

forensics requires strong connections to the social sciences especially, economics,

criminology, linguistics, psychology, and sociology to mention a few. Gathering

informational evidence is a meticulous way of investigating the reasons why a person

might have the reason or mental process to become an offender. The setting of the

digital world is attached to the human being, what decisions, behaviors and motivations

led to determining his actions to include illegal cyber offences, data breaches, fraud and

even death threats.

Many required a high level of understanding. I love the way he explained how popular tv

shows portray digital forensics, maybe in the near future we might be there, where

anything can be solved instantly, he definitely stated there is progress for sure, because

we do not use floppy disks anymore and downloadable data is greater than terabytes

like it as before, in the ancient world. He needed a more enthusiastic crowd for sure.

Like we have the capability to download the whole Netflix library in one second today.

His pathway on how he got involved in digital forensics is pretty cool, the way he found

his calling, there were no real pathways back then, like it is now, so he got lucky, took

the risk on the firm in Australia and became one of the first ones in that field, especially

coming from accounting.

Some key notes I took from him is that we need to be patient, it takes time and plenty of

more patience to be able to succeed, like anything these days, is not as exciting as it

sounds. It is important to take the risk to open opportunities, and try to reinvent

ourselves to become adaptable in any of the fields of our choosing. We might find our

calling and passion like he did. I love the idea of using the social principles of

understanding and interpreting human behavior, placing and dissecting digital evidence,

studying users’ digital activities, and to be able to reconstruct anything digital to be used

in the court of law, it is just mindblowing.

Resources:

Digital Forensics | Davin Teo | TEDxHongKongSalon – YouTube

Links to an external site.

After watching the speaker Mr. Davin Teo in his presentation on digital forensics, I am just amazed at how many fields of social sciences are involved.
