Post colonialism focuses primarily on literature written by people who were formerly colonized by European nations. Similar to African American Criticism, by using post colonialism to evaluate a literary work, the reader is better able to understand the experiences of other cultures, once thought to be savages. The people of these cultures are the only ones able to speak to their experiences, as other cultures would not understand. Through the author’s choice to add information that may not be understood by a Western reader, the reader can better relate to feelings of alienation.
“In the South” is a short story in which the author creates two very relateable characters, but also includes allusion to their native religion as well as some words in their language, not readily understood by someone who is not from their country. This is a prime example of intentional alienation, especially when Christianity is not the preferred religion.
These ideas are major contributions of Gayatri Spivak who also explains ideas of Eurocentric superiority. He also explains some of the different ways in which the colonized individuals are affected by European colonization. Because is it almost impossible to return back to the way their culture was after being colonized, even a native may feel like they are completely changed and in some cases unhomed, also referred to as a psychological refugee.
