This theory focused largely on cultural differences, particularly between Eastern and Western ideologies, as well as the alienation of certain cultures. “In the South” was the story I chose to analyze through post colonial critical theory. Though the short story was relatable, there were certain points that I did not understand, like cultural references to religion. I also did not understand certain words that were included in the author’s native language. The author’s choice to include this information helped to solidify the ideology of Western alienation, supporting post colonial theory. To build upon this paper, I would include pieces written from other countries to act as further examples of Western reader alienation, but also to would have used them to show human experiences that could be relatable across cultures.
