I chose to analyze “The Storm” using the critical theory of deconstruction as this short story easily contradicted the societal beliefs of what a successful marriage included. Using deconstruction required the identification of binary opposites, like happy or good marriage/bad marriage and faithful/unfaithful. In thinking about what I thought made a happy marriage, fidelity was one of the key components, however, this story challenged this ideology as Clixta and Alce were having an affair that, oddly enough, appeared to make them better spouses. This idea deconstructed the belief that a happy marriage was reliant upon faithfulness of both spouses. This point of deconstruction could also be referred to as the aporia, as binary opposites became each other. To build upon this paper I would find another short story that presented the same binary opposites and discuss how is supported or negated societal views of marriage, which could be used to compare and contrast “The Storm.”
