Marxism, like feminism, explored the idea of power structures. In this Sandbox Essay, I applied Marxism to “Theme for English B,” a poem by Langston Hughes. The most apparent and easiest power structure to identify in this poem was race. When thinking about the apartment the narrator had to travel to, as opposed to being able to afford to stay on campus, as well as the idea that his paper was black because he was black further solidified the power structure. The way in which I chose to analyze this piece not only supports Marxist theory, but could also support African American criticism. In order to build upon this paper, I would also include an analysis of “Theme for English B” using African American criticism.
