Feminism

When applying feminist critical theory to a piece it is important to remember that the point is not to determine whether or not the piece is feminist, instead its main focus is to explore the ideas of men overpowering women.  In “Eveline,” the lead female must rely on men in her life for her own happiness, which is argued to support an oppressive, patriarchal system.  Similar to Marxism, feminism makes a point to expose the oppressive nature of a more powerful group that maintains their status by keeping a weaker group from rising up.  “Eveline,” though not a feminist piece solidifies this idea that men have control over women’s happiness, which is further solidified by societal views of unmarried women.  To create a completed analysis I would also apply Marxist theory to discuss the differences between the type of life her family could offer her as opposed to the life Frank was prepared to give her.  I would also discuss how societal views of familial duties align with both Marxism and feminism to oppress Eveline into deciding to stay home with her abusive father.
