African American Criticism

In “Recitatif,” Toni Morrison did not include any indication of the race of the two female characters.  This made a large impact on my view of the piece when using African American criticism as it required me to decide the races of Twyla and Roberta.  The way in which this short story was written required the reader to look at their own ideas of black and white as well as societal views of black and white to make a decision.  This was a very eye-opening experience at it made me think about ways in which white people are privileged and lack understanding.  To create a well-rounded analysis, I would also apply feminist theory to this piece.  It would be interesting to compare the oppression of white women to the oppression of black women under both a feminist and African American critical lenses.
