SPAN 102

Exploring Culture

In Spanish speaking cultures, markets play an important role in lifestyle. At these markets tourists and locals alike come to shop, try local delicacies, and be entertained by street performers.

I think these markets would be an awesome way to submerge oneself into the culture of a different place. Trying new foods and benefitting the local economy is important. I love to go to my local Asian supermarket to buy fruits and noodles that I can’t get in any other place. I also think it’s a great way to support local business.

Engaging in Communities

Engaging in my local and global community is so valuable. It helps provide global knowledge. My best friend’s family is a host for foreign exchange students around my age, and I saw how globally concious and knowledgable they were on not only American culture, but many others as well. This is very different from the people I know and associate with on a daily basis in the United States.

This is me and my friend Alvaro, that I met during his visit to the U.S. from Spain. I learned so much about their culture. He speaks Portuguese, but is fluent in English as well.

Interpersonal Communication

For Spanish 102 I have the opportunity to complete discussion boards and VHL activities that required me to communicate in complete sentences with full comprehension of the reading material that was being covered for different chapters.

Presentational Speaking

On the website VHL Central, I was asked questions regarding my mornings. Here in this video below, you can see me asking and asnwering questions about my morning in Spanish.

This assignment challenged me because I am very nervous to speak in front of large groups of people, and with this ideo online, I know anyone with the link can view it. Enjoy!

Presentational Writing

In this composition, I talk about going on a vacation to Athens, Greece. I write about the things I will do, my schedule, and the ammenities offered in general.

I love written compositions, because writing in Spanish seems a lot easier than speaking the language (at least to me personally). I have some friends that are fluent in other languages besides English, and I like to think that being around them helps me with this class, especially when it comes to the pronounciation of words.

Interpretive Listening

Even though I am taking Spanish 102 online, I still need to log into class zoom sessions at a specific time and make sure I am listening intently on my profesora’s instructions. Profesora Padilla helped us communicate and pronounce Spanish words and phrases. Here are some notes I have taken during lecture to show my listening skills:

This semster I learned so many things. I loved when my professora would speak outside of the material we were learning because hearing the casual conversations in a different language in very interesting. I wish to work on my listening skills better, however, because I feel as though my reading interpretations are easier than the verbal interpretations.

Interpretive Reading

In English, give a very brief 2-3 line description of interpretive communication activities you read in and out of class this semester, such as articles, stories, websites like theĀ Language Learning Center, etc. that you completed for or related to your Spanish learning. Include a copy of one of these activities; remember to cite it. (See Modes of Communication link for description and examples).

Although I was participating in an online class, I had to read a good amount of my VHL textbook in order to study for tests and quizzes, and practice for interpersonal commuication.

This reading above was one of my favorites because I got to learn more about spanish culture. I find it interesting when I read about the Inca community and their markets. I learned that the Inca’s would have
