My internship with the Chesapeake Regional Mobile Clinic has provided me with extensive exposure to both patient care operations and the administrative coordination required to deliver healthcare services within a community setting. Most days begin with preparing the mobile clinic for operation by setting up the bus, placing the free walk-in appointment sign outside, organizing equipment so it is readily accessible to staff, and sanitizing surfaces and equipment to ensure a safe environment for patients and providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once patients begin arriving, I serve as one of the first points of contact by asking what they would like to be seen for and helping them begin the appropriate paperwork while addressing any immediate needs or concerns they may have. After registration is completed, I assist staff members throughout the patient encounter by gathering equipment, printing documents, scribing, documenting or obtaining vital signs, and preparing private examination spaces. Due to the limited space available within the mobile clinic, effective communication and coordination among staff members are essential to maintaining an efficient workflow when multiple patients arrive at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During slower periods, I use the opportunity to better understand the operations and logistics involved in managing a mobile healthcare service. This has included learning how the clinic utilizes the Epic electronic medical record system and Microsoft Teams to document patient information, coordinate care, and communicate with providers and support staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have also assisted with patient communication responsibilities, including scheduling follow-up appointments, obtaining referral information for specialty care, communicating laboratory results, answering patient questions, and helping individuals schedule future appointments. On days outside of routine clinic operations, I have participated in community resource fairs, particularly within retirement communities, and have had opportunities to observe procedures performed by the Nurse Practitioner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Throughout every shift, I actively observe patient interactions with the medical team and engage in discussions with providers and staff regarding clinical workflows, operational challenges, and opportunities for improvement within the mobile clinic model. These experiences have provided valuable insight into both healthcare delivery and the managerial processes necessary to operate an effective community-based healthcare program.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
