Sports Journal Blog 4: ODU Esports

Part 1: Campus Survey

What Our Group Was Tasked With:

For eight weeks total, my group and I worked on ways to improve the publicity of the Old Dominion University Esports team. Our first task for this assignment was to create a survey that could provide quantitative data to the team. We developed a short questionnaire that asked questions like, “What kind of video games do you play?” and “What do you play video games on?”. These types of questions allowed us to gauge what games should be the focus for our Esports team and if we have the preferred systems that people play on their own around campus.

Our Results:

This turned out to be a successful survey as we received over 60+ responses from students around the university. We also added a QR code to make the survey as easy as possible for people to fill out, as we know people are busy and don’t want to take up much of their time. Much of the data we collected surprised us with a majority of people knowing about the Esports arena but not knowing where it is located. Another key takeaway from our survey was how people wanted a more flexible schedule for when they go to the Esports arena, as many of the participants play video games in the evening or at night.

Thoughts On The Process After Our Survey:

We delivered our results through a PowerPoint presentation showing graphs of our data and our impressions of what we think these results mean. After we delivered our presentation, the two heads of the Esports team jotted notes down to improve the arena based on our analysis.

Part 2: Video Plan

What Our Task Is Moving Forward:

The second portion of our overall Esports project was to create a video plan as to how the Esports team can better position themselves on social media. We spent weeks planning out a TikTok-styled video for our team that they ended up using for their own TikTik account. We demonstrated that TikTok was one of the best ways to reach an audience and increase engagement on the team’s social media.

How It Turned Out:

We made our style of video based on the Grand Theft Auto: V camera angle, which is a trend at the moment on TikTok. We sped the video up, like most TikToks, and showed different ways to reach the Esports arena. We added some trending music in the background and made some clean transitions with specific text on the screen to give more information to the audience. We replicated this video three times with each member of our group to show the different entrances.

The Final Presentation:

For the final portion of this project, we compiled our 3 TikToks on a presentation and provided some information on how easy it is to create these videos and how many should be made on a per-week basis. We went further into depth explaining how the algorithm works for these types of platforms. Our overall message to finish off the PowerPoint was to stress that sticking to a content strategy/style setup is important to going viral. This ended up being a successful last part of our project as the video examples turned out well and impressed the two heads of the Esports team.
