The CIA Triad

The CIA Triad is a three legged stool for people and businesses to use to ensure safety and availability to any who needs it (Fruhlinger). The CIA Triad stands for, Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability. Each part of the triad plays an important role for keeping data secure and available. Confidentiality makes sure the data is secure and only the people who are authorized to see the data are able to access it. This ensures safety of data and is important for anyone who needs security of data. The different types of confidentiality are, authentication and authorization. The two play a huge role in the CIA Triad. The two are different but play almost the same role. Authentication makes sure you are the person you say you are. An example of authentication are passwords, this tells the system who you are. Authorization makes sure you have access to the secured data. This acts as the last defense and makes sure that you are truly who you say you are. An example of this being put to use is two-part authentications. The first part might be a password then the second part could be a code sent to your phone or even an eye scan. The next part of the triad is integrity, the importance of integrity is that it ensures that the data that is being stored is not allowed to be modified by someone who isn’t authorized. An example of this is, making sure data is only able to be edited by the creator and others that are authorized. Last part of the triad is availability, which allows, “authorized users to be able to access data whenever they need to do so” (Fruhlinger). This is important to ensure that important data can be accessed at any time of the day even if a business is closed or its after hours. An example of availability is, Blackboard. You can access important information at any time of the day and even when school is closed. The CIA Triad is important to everyone who needs to make sure their information is secure. This three step process ensures safety of information and helps maintain the integrity of a website or business
