Stakeholder
Christopher Newport University P.A.S.S. program has merged a lasting relationship between the athletic program and Newport News’ public schools. This program has been around close to twenty years and services to ensure at-risk kids make a smooth transition from grade to grade, in the classroom and within their community, while receiving volunteer help from student-athletes at Christopher Newport. When evaluating this program, I must take into account its stakeholders. Stakeholders are people and organizations that have an interest or are affected by the outcome of the evaluation. This includes directors, managers, clients, community members, students, churches, and schools. My evaluation of Christopher Newport Community Engagement program, specifically P.A.S.S. I will be interacting with Vanessa Buehlman, interim director of community engagement, Roland Ross, director of the PA.S.S. program, volunteer student-athletes at Christopher Newport, public school teachers and students, churches, recreations centers and Martha Davis of the food Bank of America. Using the five ethical principles which are the systematic inquiry, competence, integrity/honesty, respect for people and responsibilities for the general and public welfare with cooperation for my stakeholders I can conduct a thorough assessment of the program.
Type of Evaluation
I will use the success case method for my evaluation of the P.A.S.S. program. Because I want to know the degree to which the program is successful and what parts of the program works well and what needs improvement. I could also compare and contrast the separate groups for their success rate. These two groups are the volunteer student-athletes and the at-risk kids in the public schools. With the college students, I can see if the program benefits them, be it social, educational, or morally. The same can be done with groups of students to find out what makes the program work for them. Contrasting the good and bad is part of the success case method and I look forward to using it to analyze the data I gather.
Research Question
I’m doing my evaluation on the Christopher Newport University Community Engage Program. The program identifies at-risk youth in the Newport News school system and helps kids transition from grade to grade through tutoring, campus activities, and mentorship by student-athletes. I proposed two research questions on the discussion post but decided to go my second choice. I want to know what are the goals of the program and has there been any resistance from the schools, parents, faculty, or the community? This should allow me to get my stakeholders involved in the process. I will need them to help identify program activities, ease the resistance, and review evaluation findings.
Data
Some of the possible sources of data collections are staff members, program participants, teachers, community leaders, and records. Because there is a large number of people involved, I will use a number of ways to collect data. The main source will be program observation. By this I mean I will collect information by listening and watching the interaction of the participants. I will also conduct interviews and surveys with the stakeholders. Lastly, I will do a group assessment to collect data through a focus group with the student-athletes at Christopher Newport.
Research Methods
My research method will be a mixed method. I will use some both quantitative and qualitative data. Because I’m conducting a group assessment, interviews, surveys, throughout the evaluation process the mixing method of research works. The general observation on the program at work would be the uses of the qualitative method. The information gathered from the surveys will require the quantitative method. The mix method approach assures me evaluation’s outcome has integrity, honesty, and resources necessary to improve the program plus help the stakeholders.
