SCADA and Critical Infrastructure

The things that keep our society running are very critical. They consist of water treatment plants, power grids, oil pipelines, and transportation networks. Technology has to keep these systems in line and make sure they operate safely and efficiently. They have unfortunately become more vulnerable to cyber attacks. The SCADA system is one of the most important of the technologies used. SCADA is there to keep all the different systems safe and monitor industrial operations.

Vulnerabilities in Critical Infrastructure Systems

Having technology consistently evolve causes many vulnerabilities to open up. A system that has been used in the past is SCADA. They used communication methods and kept them isolated. The reason it worked well is because they were disconnected from the rest of the world. They then later connected to more professional business networks.

This increased expansion to other networks opened up the possibility for hackers to intercept the different systems. They can take advantage of outdated software, easy passwords, and unsecured access. An example, “programmable logic controllers (PLCs) used in the Water and Wastewater Systems” (CISA). The weaker the security to systems like these show that the critical systems used are not that strong.

One of the other major problems is human error. A lot of the operators have to rely on human machine interfaces to make sure the systems are moving and working as they should. The lack of attendance and skillwork can lead to many mistakes. These mistakes can lead to easy breaches and operational disruptions.

Another vulnerability can be the balance of safety, security, and uptime. The main problem with the balance is the control systems take awhile to shut down for updates. The period between updates and uptime gives the hackers time to intrude and take advantage of the systems.

The Role of SCADA in Risk Mitigation

The risks that have been created by SCADA have also been reduced by SCADA. One of the best SCADA environments can help improve visibility, control, and response time across the whole operation process.

Real time monitoring is a big advantage that SCADA brings to the table. How this works is while the monitoring is going on it will alert all operators when something happens. The alerts that may occur are a valve malfunction, temperature spike, or an unusual system reading. The importance of these alerts allows operators to quickly react and prevent any types of attacks from escalating.

The SCADA systems also strengthen their systems with redundancy and segmentation. They have lots of unnecessary hardware that can help if one part of the system fails, another can take over fluidly. Separating the control systems from business networks can also help prevent a breach in one area from spreading.

Conclusion

The technological advances can create operational challenges and growing cybersecurity for critical infrastructure systems. Factors that increased this are outdated hardware, network expansion, and human errors. That is where properly trained SCADA systems come into play. They help operators keep everything secure through redundancy, alerts, and communication. SCADA systems make sure they are developing new ways to protect services of our communities.
