CHP 415W: CRITICAL ISSUES IN COMMUNITY HEALTH ADMINISTRATION
This was a writing intensive course that kept me busy throughout the semester. During the course, we reviewed and wrote on several critical issues in community health and reviewed social, economic, ethical, historical and political aspects of community health. I was able to develop skills that enabled me to analyze present and future community health issues. I gained knowledge of human cultures and the physical and natural world as it relates to individual and population health by conducting research on major health challenges on the local, national, and global arena. I got a better understood of how population health is impacted by finances, healthcare delivery, public health services, organizational structures, and science and technology.
The use of scientific data, including informatic tools to assess the well-being of a community helped me gain intellectual and practical skills. Research also helped me outline approaches for assessing and controlling environmental hazards that affect community health. We learnt that to address health inequities and disparities, collaboration with people and communities of diverse background is vital.
We learnt personal and social responsibility and who influences health programs and interventions, community engagement in promoting population health, the role of individuals and the community during health emergencies and disaster preparedness. By taking this course, I can champion prevention in promoting community health, and can advocate for evidence-based social changes that can improve individual and community health.
Application of skills and knowledge was evident during my Internship. I was part of a COVID-19 working group and this involved collaborating with local, State, and Navy and Marine Corps Public Health entities in our planning and response. This was indeed the practical side of the course and the experience that I took from the Internship will be valuable to my career as a Healthcare administrator. Looking back, I had been prepared as a student by researching and writing on Emerging Infectious Diseases.
