Artifact 3

For my top artifact I chose my image from module 12, of a focused black woman in a library. I think she represents me because she looks very focused and in her zone. She seems to have a good posture and has a look of determination. In my opinion she can seem unapproachable because she looks so focus, which isn’t inherently a bad thing. I rarely slouch, and seem very poise by my body language. I liked this module the most because representation of emotion is very important when talking about certain topics in social psychology. There’s so many different emotions, and different ways to express them.

From the TED talk video I learned that emotional expression really says more than any amount of words. For example the explanation of the power dynamics of body language and other non-verbal expression. I learned that when people typically feel someone has a higher power in the natural power dynamic, we tend to compliment the other’s non verbal stance/attitude. I further understand how much intricate humans nonverbal cues really express and/or communicate to other people, and important it is to learn other cultures’ cues.

Artifact 2

For my top artifact, I chose my image that represents my perception of time. The module 10 activity essentially instructed to approximate how long you would wait for a specific person if they’re running late. The different people ranged from parents to friends to even bosses. I think it was interesting how more willing I was to wait for my parents and friends in contrasts to my boss. I liked this activity because I did not realize how much grace I give a certain person when they are running late. It did help me understand how my culture shaped my view of time, and how it is bad to be late for anything. In other cultures time is seen as fluid and futuristic. As if there is no need to rush anything in life because time will always continue to flow.

My image is a quote with the character Time from Alice Through The Looking Glass. I’ve always perceived time as being inevitable, there is nothing that will stop it from going. Though inevitable, it is still a gift. Not everyone has the same allowance on time, so I try to cherish the allotment of time I have during my lifetime.

Artifact 1

My first top artifact is from Module 5: Enculturation Activity.  I liked this activity the most because often times I observe my parents personalities and morals, comparing them to my own. It’s just amazing how many parallels I see between me and my parents. During this activity I also saw how different we are in the same regard.  For instance a question from the activity was how we should change communication style depending who we are talking to and the context we are in. My values are we shouldn’t change our communication styles because we should be authentic to ourselves no matter the person or context. My parents felt the opposite and believed that people should show a certain level of respect when talking to people in a particular context.

I liked this item the most because I am a product of my parents. My parental setup is not a typical one so I definitely think me having more than two parents affected how my own values and morals were embedded in me. Also in a way I learned how their morals effected me in a way to not want to be someone with their type of morals (i.e the communication question). Across the entire module, it made me think about how I would raise my own children. Whether that be passing my own values down to them, or letting them create and find their own.
