In the application of African American Theory, I chose the short story Girl by Jamaica Kincaid. I chose this short story for African American critical theory because the protagonist in the story is racialized, gendered, and classed by her own mother. The protagonist very existence subversively disrupts the status quo enforced by the Western world. While working with this theory, I learned new terms for my daily experiences as an African American woman. I was also able to understand others viewpoints on the subject, and how the oppression of African Americans affects/reflects the oppression of the collective.
