- United States vs. Japan – Cybersecurity risks
The United States has the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency while Japan has the National center of Incident readiness and strategy For Cybersecurity. Looking at both agencies websites, the United States has a stronger hold on Cybersecurity. The government’s ability to aid its citizens in the reduction of cybersecurity risks should be top priority.
According to the International Journal of Cyber Criminology Gross Domestic product is indicator to whether the country has access to the technologies to be involved in cybercrime. (Kigerl) Japan and the United States both have high GDP’s. This would indicate from the above that both countries are at high risk for cybercrimes.
Some cyber security risks are going to be the same as the whole world is still facing a pandemic. The pandemic has made it so that individuals in each country are working from home. Working from home poses its own cybersecurity risk, from cloud computing to file transfers between employees.
Privacyshield.gov mentions a report by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) that a 2016 report identified a shortage of i.t. professional around 193,010 in 2020. (Privacy Shield) The United States is said to add around 531, 200 jobs by 2029 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.) With the advance in i.t. jobs in America compared to Japan; the cyber security risks associated with fewer workers in Japan will continue to pose a problem, even if the quality rises. You will still need people to feel those cybersecurity roles through the different industries.
Japan being a great ally to the United States is greatly reducing the overall time it would take to get a fully government backed cybersecurity program going strong. The examples provided above only prove that we(the United States) must continue to build strong relationships in all aspects with our allies, so that the future for all is prosperous and meaningful.
