Technology has infiltrated every aspect of everyday life and the repercussions have yet to be seen. Workplace deviance is now become more of an issue in terms of cyber technologies. Research shows that 81% of Americans now own a smartphone. (Pew Research Center) Screeneducation.org conducted a survey that shows employees spend 2.4 hours per workday on non-work-related digital content. (Screen education) The internet has given way to even more workplace deviance. Employees are now using work resources to shop, conduct social media activities, communicate non work-related talk with friends and family. This is also exposing some business issues in public forum by way of social media. Productivity has caused loss in business and revenue in the millions. Even more serious, is the insider who could use their credentials to do harm towards the business. Insider threats can arise from workplace deviance in the form a disgruntled employee. The employee may feel they have been done wrong. When the employee in question feels this way, they may want to do harm to the business. Cyber bullying in the workplace has become part of human resource task list. This kind of deviance has been made easier in the workplace due to all the technologies available.
Now on the other side, businesses are using this same technology to circumvent workplace deviance, increase productivity, stop malicious intent, and save money.
