Why are you interested in cybersecurity technology?
I decided to pursue cybersecurity technology because I believe it to be a culmination of two passions of mine; technology and providing care. My original major when I enrolled into college was Nursing but after evaluating some of my priorities I realized it was not the best career path for me. I chose information technology because technology itself piqued my interest. I often compare the phones from my adolescence to the phones of today and the difference in capabilities are astronomical. The concept of technology is still new in comparison to the amount of years without it, but yet the number of advancements it has provided and continues to provide makes up for that. Computers when they were first created were bigger than the size of refrigerators but a PC is able to complete the same tasks without the extra space. Even though these developments are what caused me to switch my major, I still wanted to be able to help people. As the capabilities in the realm of technology continue to be pushed, it can be hard to understand these developments especially in populations where technology wasn’t as heavily incorporated into society. As a personal example, last year my grandparents recently upgraded their phones to the most recent iPhone and this year they are still learning how to operate them. It has been a learning curve for them but being able to teach them operate them has been a great experience for us. While I teach them how to operate their phones, I also have to to teach them about protecting their personal information on the internet. Seeing this made me realize that what I am experiencing may not only affect my grandparents but millions around the world. Information literacy is not a requirement to operate a phone leaving people vulnerable to threats that they are not able to understand and knowing that I am able to protect sensitive populations like my grandparents continues to motivate me to continue to pursue my career in cybersecurity.
