With how prevalent social media has become in many people’s day-to-day life its bound to skew the reality of certain situations. Cybersecurity is more than just a master hacker sitting behind a computer but rather it is a combination of many different human and technological factors. The entertainment industry portrays cyber events as distant threats, but millions of people are impacted every day. I think social and entertainment sites mainly portray cybersecurity events in a certain manner that’s based in fantasy rather than reality. This combined with the fact that digital literacy is not that common further proves how easily thoughts surrounding cybersecurity can be skewed. I do think that presently the portrayals are getting more accurate as compared to possibly 10 through 20 years ago. However, I do think there will always be inaccuracies when it comes to entertainment. I think one of the main problems with portrayals of cybersecurity in in older movies is that they show these events as fast paced and a spectacle. They show the hacker frantically typing, completing extra steps, and only targeting major corporations. While these are entertaining to watch, it just isn’t accurate now. I wouldn’t expect for the portrayals from older time periods to be more accurate than newer entertainment. When the effort Is taken for accurate portrayal the improvements that were made in newer forms of entertainment i shows the variability in scenarios and how social engineering is used to attack people. I will say as society has had more time with social media, we have been able to understand the landscape as well as the people who navigate them, hacker or not.
