Module 6 Journal Entry – CYSE 201S

One major misconception that I believed heavily when I was younger was portrayed throughout entertainment and it was that major businesses organizations are only targeted by hackers/cybercriminals when the people impacted most by cyber events are civilians. Before getting digital literacy training and asked to describe a hacker, I would’ve described someone with a hooded figure breaching impenetrable firewalls stealing millions and causing global chaos. While these portrayals were appealing to me and millions of other people for entertainment these portrayals have real world consequences.  In movies, hackers target large corporations and steal their assets, people are drawn to this stereotype but not the reality of situations. Individual attacks lack the same visual punch as larger scale ones. Stolen credit card details or personal information may not translate well to film. The thing about cybercriminals is that while they do target large corporations, they are opportunistic and target individuals that are the easiest. We see them portrayed as focusing on flashy corporate tax we forget the fact that if they are willing to target large entities then everyone is a potential target. I needed to realize this to prevent myself from becoming vulnerable to more cyber-atta. Before this I can recount an instance when I wanted to get more currency in a virtual game and clicked a link someone sent to me, which resulted in me losing my account and all my limited items with it. For people to prevent themselves from falling victim like me they need to remain vigilant about online scams and strengthen their passwords and small businesses must prioritize investing in cybersecurity in ensuring that employees receive proper training.
