After completing the questions on the SMD scale, I received a score of 0. I didn’t expect to receive this score due to my past behaviors on social media usage but the distinction of within the past year helped me. I think the questions asked in the scale are accurate to possibly identify if someone has social media disorder. When I think of a disorder, I think of it disrupting usual daily activities and making it hard to engage in daily life in the questions provided help make that distinction. Keeping this in mind I expected to score around 5 since I was thinking about my social media usage during the pandemic. Before the pandemic I was enrolled in three extracurricular activities and the nursing program in my school. School provided activities that engaged me and allowed me to focus on my studies instead of SM (social media). During the pandemic I experienced a decrease in my participation in extracurricular activities due to my high school closing. I found my screen time on my phone begin to increase as my school activities shifted to online. Social media help provide me with the boost of dopamine that was usually provided during school. I I don’t think this is limited to my generation due to people globally being impacted by the pandemic, but some people probably have a social media disorder due to the escape it provides. Even though this is my situation, there will be a variation in patterns due to how different people are along with the situation around them. Some people may be dangerous situations where social media can help provide a sense of happiness and connection, and some people who just may want to procrastinate. Every pattern surrounding SMD should be expected to be different.
