Blog 10- Now & Then

Re-reading my Blog 1, I said that my initial course expectations were to learn more about the behavior of individuals, and how they are affected by groups and people around them. In this class I thought we would discuss the processes in which people go through to attempt to understand others, discuss origins and effects, learn about how attitudes are formed and changed, and much more. I think that I have accomplished these course objectives very well because I have learned something in all these areas. My attitudes toward social psychology have changed dramatically because I know why myself and people around me act certain ways in society. If I were to take this course again and do something differently, I would probably take more notes so I could look back in my notebook and review previous information learned. One way that I have grown academically over the last few months is that I have gained more knowledge about social psychology, and I have learned better time management skills. One skill that I learned that I can utilize in my professional life is how to create my own website on WordPress. I can use this skill as a part of my resume and also for any company if needed.

I chose this visual image because you have to be accountable in order to see growth academically. This meme was relatable to me because if I wasn’t accountable then I would not be a successful student.

Blog 9- Top 3

Out of all the concepts that we learned about this semester, the top 3 that I learned the most about was emotional intelligence, credibility, and mating. For emotional intelligence I learned that self-regulation is being able to control your emotions and behavior and having the ability to understand them. During this concept we had to decipher between self-regulation and emotional intelligence. Because of this I learned more about what having a good emotional intelligence is, and how I personally use it to handle my emotions properly after I have already identified and understood them in situations that occur on a day to day basis. We use these two things all the time in our life and finally being able to relate it definitions helped me get a better understanding of them.

For the concept of credibility, I got to examine advertisements harder than I normally would. I learned how to look at an advertisement and determine if it is credible or if someone who is not involved with the company or brand created it. We learned to analyze an advertisement in the context of rules and common sense, and how that might reveal what makes it credible, not credible, or simply attractive. This made me realize even more that you can’t trust everything that is on the internet. Credibility kind of relates to emotional intelligence in a way that you have to be intelligent enough or use your common sense to know that an advertisement is false.

For my last concept mating, I was able to learn more about romantic relationships in general but also with my significant other and the relationship that we have. Blog 8 taught me more about sexual conflict and what it consists of between men and women. I was able to determine what upsets both a man and a woman in regards to sexual relations, and how they approach mating in different ways. I feel like this concept relates to social psychology as a whole.

I chose this meme because I thought it was relatable. I am a very organized person when it comes to my room, car, or school work. I realized that being disorganized won’t allow you to be successful because you have to keep your materials separate and remember each concept as a whole.

Blog 8- Mating

Mating is the pairing of heterosexual humans with the intention to marry and reproduce. A couple has to take on many things together which can lead to the possibility of disagreements with thoughts, feeling, actions, and sexual desires. Sexual intercourse is an important thing in todays’s society as it expands families and forms new relationships; however, it can lead to sexual conflict. Sexual conflict is when the sexual interests of one mate is different from the other. Some men have the desire to mate just for sexual reasons, and have no interest in marrying or starting a family. On the other hand, women tend to only mate with people that they can see themselves with in the future, as well as with a man they can see being a potential father to their kids. Men tend to try and assert their dominance over women because they have the power of fertilizing a woman’s eggs, but both men and women have the power of starting a family. Men and women approach mating in different ways and it may cause disagreements.

There are multiple things that a man and a woman can do to upset each other in regards to sexual relations. Women tend to get upset when they feel like men are judging their body type and pointing out their flaws. This can make them feel insecure and hesitant to become intimate because they don’t have the “perfect body”. Men tend to get upset when women make fun of their size, physical abilities, and height which makes them think they aren’t good enough or need to workout more.

Blog 7- Emotional Intelligence

Self-regulation is controlling your emotions or behaviors and being able to understand them. Self-regulation includes relaxing your body and mind to help yourself make good decisions, and performing body scans that consist of closing your eyes and breathing evenly and open into your body to release tension to make rational choices. Another way to practice self-regulation is to watch your emotions and pay attention to what gets you worked up, if you are aware of your judgments, they start to lose power the more that you think about your thoughts. Once you have a more positive look on your emotions, you will have a greater balance in your life and are able to find inner peace. Emotional intelligence is connected to self-regulation because having a good self-regulation makes it easier for one to respond in a positive way when emotions arise. Having a good emotional intelligence to me means being able to handle your emotions properly after you have already identified and understood them in situations that occur on a day to day basis.

Personally, I believe that I have a good emotional intelligence because I handle situations in the best way that I possibly can. I am mature enough now to voice my emotions civilly and I admit when I am in the wrong. I do some of the techniques that were suggested in the Youtube video, specifically taking a few moments to breathe when I have gotten worked up or stressed about a situation. This seems to always help me and relax my body during times I need it the most.

I took the EQ (emotional intelligence) quiz on the Institute for Health and Human Potential website and my quiz score was “Good EQ”. The results said that the level of my “EQ likely has been and will be a driver of your high performance under pressure for years to come.” I wasn’t surprised by the results because I know how I perform under pressure and how I handle myself during arguments.

Blog 5- Credibility

3 Apple Ads

Analyzing an advertisement in the context of rules and common sense might reveal what makes it credible, not credible, or simply attractive. To really focus on these three things, I chose to research the type of advertisements that the well-known company Apple, has on the internet. Since this is a commonly known company, it isn’t hard to find other advertisements that Apple didn’t necessarily create that are false. To identify if the advertisement is credible or not, you have to think if the information that they are presenting is valid or not.

In the first advertisement that I selected, it is credible because it gives information on how much the iPhone 12 costs including the prices. The second advertisement is not credible because it clearly gives false information. A system update on the Iphone cannot make it waterproof. The third advertisement is simply attractive because it has a famous celebrity, Lady Gaga promoting the company for her music career which is appealing to the viewer of the ad.

Blog 4- Exam Review

For my exam review I took all the questions that I got wrong and wrote them down so I could look back at them for a future reference. On the exam, I got a 94/100 so I took the 6 questions that I got wrong and went through my notes and the textbook to try and find the correct answers. Looking back at my results, I realized that the incorrect answers were either areas I didn’t know too much about, or just silly mistakes. I did look over the review sheet prior to the test, and I took notes from the textbook and the jeopardy reviews in class. I found this feedback to be useful and it will definitely help me in the future for studying prior to a test in class. Sometimes I don’t always study a week at the most before tests and I might try and change my study habits to see if I get a better score on the next test that I take for this course.

I chose this meme because it describes me while studying. I get distracted easily and I think I have been reviewing material for longer than I actually was.

Blog 3- Music & Relationships

Music has been a resource for people to connect for decades now. People display “musical bonding” early in relationships by feeling that they have similar beliefs and ideals. Music tastes reveal information about an individual’s key principles in life, and someone who might have the same core values will want to associate themselves with that person. According to the text that we read, instead of matching personalities and qualities, the link between music and relationship development is based on shared beliefs and ideals. I find this information to be valid because I tend to associate myself with those I share similar music interests with. I know that whenever I hangout with my friends, every song that I play they know and vise versa. Music helps people form connections and it has always been like that. Individuals form opinions about other people’s personality based on their musical preferences.

Here are 6 songs that I associate with people in my life:

  1. Anne Wilson- “My Jesus”

This song reminds me of the relationship between my mom and I. We always heard this song on the radio in the car and it became our song. Now we always play this song during a tough time or when we are simply missing each other. This song speaks to me and lifts my head up when I am feeling down.

2. Billy Currington- “Details”

This song reminds me of my boyfriend. He always sings this song to me and it is also the ringtone for his alarm every morning. Whenever I hear this song I think of him, and I classify it as one of our many songs that we share.

3. Walker Hayes- “Fancy Like”

This song reminds me of my dad and sister. My dad always played this song in the car because my 9 year old sister loved singing along to it, and it is family friendly. This song is very catchy and has been popular on multiple social media platforms.

4. Mac Miller- “The Spins”

Mac Miller- The Spins

This song takes me back to the day I graduated high school. After my class walked across the stage, my friends and I jammed to this song at a high volume in the car as we were leaving the ceremony. Every time I hear this song, it puts me in a good mood, it is so easy to dance and sing along to.

5. Summer Walker- “Girls Need Love Remix”

I chose this song because it is a vibe and always a go-to for me. Whenever this song comes up on my playlist I never skip it. I love this song because I think it is relatable, and I love Summer Walker’s voice.

6. Morgan Wallen- “Neon Eyes”

Every time I hear this song it reminds me of summer, either driving with the windows down, on the boat, or laying by the pool or on the beach. Morgan Wallen is my favorite country singer, and all of his songs put me in a good mood.

Blog 2-Self Efficacy

I believe that I am a very successful student. I am very determined to receive good grades, I am studious, am very organized, and have good time management skills. I rarely ever wait until the last minute to complete something, and I do everything to the best of my ability. As a student, I have succeeded in every subject except for math, but I think everyone has their weaknesses. When I got to college, I was very determined to do my best and the first semester I made the Dean’s List. I am always wanting to learn something new, and I think that also makes me a successful student. I wouldn’t say that my confidence levels are high, I sometimes submit an assignment or a test and second guess myself as to whether or not I did well on it, and I do have some testing anxiety which can be a complication and very frustrating at times. My self efficacy result was a 3.3 out of a highest score of a 4.0. I was expecting my score to be somewhat in the middle, and not too close to 4.0. Although I make good grades, it doesn’t mean I am overly confident in my work.

Visual Image:

I added a screen shot of my GPA from 2021-2022. This just shows that even though I am confident, I do not have a 4.0 GPA and that is just fine. I am happy with my progress and how far I have come at the collegiate level.

Blog 1- Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to learn more about the behavior of individuals, and how they are affected by groups and people around them. In this class we will discuss the processes in which people go through to attempt to understand others, discuss origins and effects, learn about how attitudes are formed and changed, and much more. Taking this class to learn more about social psychology will help me in the future by providing an explanation as to why myself and others act a certain way in society. My expectations for this class is to grow my knowledge on psychology and learn more about this specific field of it. Taking this course will help me for the future and what I would like to do with my major in psychology, which happens to be studying individuals and how they act in social settings. To ensure my success in this course, I plan to complete every assignment in a timely manner and to the best of my ability, and to make the course more personable by relating it to what I see in a day-to-day basis.

I chose this image as a representation of heuristics. In this movie, Cinderella runs away from the prince and the ball at midnight and loses her shoe on the steps. In an attempt to find her, the prince uses a heuristic approach and checks only houses in the kingdom where women of beauty would live. That strategy failed, so he came up with a different plan to find her which was searching house-to-house in the kingdom.
