Time flies, and graduation is fast approaching. Being a part of Old Dominion University (ODU) for the past two years has been an honor. During my time here, I have gained an in-depth understanding of cybersecurity and worked with various tools and technologies, including Python, Cisco Networking, Ubuntu, Linux, and Windows Systems. While the journey has been fulfilling, it has also been challenging. Balancing a full-time job, managing personal responsibilities like cooking and cleaning, and pursuing a degree has required a lot of dedication and time management.
This semester, I have taken four classes, each requiring a unique level of effort. One of the most demanding was my cryptography course. I initially struggled with this class, even dropping it last year due to difficulty. However, this semester, I dedicated two hours daily to studying, and I am proud to say I am currently achieving an A. Another challenging class was CYSE280, a Windows-focused course. While I was familiar with Windows, the lab assignments required significant time—about 3 to 4 hours per assignment—to ensure successful completion. On the other hand, IT281, an information technology course, was relatively easier to manage. Lastly, IDS493 required me to work extensively with WordPress, which I had some prior experience with but have greatly improved upon through this course.
The interdisciplinary nature of IDS493 has been especially relevant, given the current challenges faced by cybersecurity students, such as the competitive job market. This course has taught me valuable skills, including creating a professional online presence that can serve as a portfolio to showcase my work to potential employers. Through WordPress, I have learned to design and enhance webpages, making them more visually appealing and organized to capture viewers’ attention. For example, with feedback from my classmates and guidance from Professor Megan, I was able to make significant improvements to my page, including adjustments to color contrast, themes, and overall layout.
While my professional work does not directly relate to this course, IDS493 has broadened my perspective by teaching me to think from the viewer’s point of view. This insight is invaluable, as I plan to continue using WordPress after graduation to document my future projects and accomplishments. By maintaining an updated portfolio, I aim to keep potential employers informed of my skills and achievements.
Cybersecurity is not just about binary code or hacking systems—it is a multidisciplinary field. For instance, psychology plays a crucial role in understanding how hackers think, which is essential for developing strategies to mitigate threats. IDS493 has reinforced the importance of showcasing evidence of one’s work. This course will stay with me as a cornerstone of my academic journey, reminding me to continually document my growth and achievements.
To future cybersecurity students: remember that cybersecurity extends beyond technical skills. Classes like IDS493 equip you with the tools to demonstrate your capabilities and stand out in a competitive field. This course has expanded my knowledge and taught me the importance of presenting my journey in a meaningful way. I will continue to build upon these skills, ensuring my WordPress portfolio remains a testament to my dedication and progress.
