Common online behaviors may actually be illegal, and internet users could be engaging in these illegal behaviors unwittingly. Bullying and trolling is extremely common on the Internet, where individuals may feel safe to act in ways that are not common for them outside of the Internet. Recently, apps have gained the ability to take action against individuals who are committing acts of bullying. Additionally, using other peoples’ Internet networks can actually be against the law. Using someone else’s network without permission can be considered stealing, which is illegal (Slynchuk, 2021). Another shocking behavior that could be illegal is using copyrighted images, a fairly common behavior online.

To avoid accidentally engaging in illegal behaviors online, there are some steps that Internet users can take. Firstly, users should limit information they share online, especially personal information. Using a VPN can also provide increased anonymity and online privacy. Third, experts recommend using a private or incognito mode when browsing online. Lastly, creating strong passwords is a great step to protecting yourself against hacks. This can include long passwords which utilize both numbers, letters, capital letters, and small letters. In the future, my online presence will be more mindful, and this information will be factored into my activities. Using the four protection behaviors, such as a VPN, strong passwords, incognito mode, and limiting information, are helpful practices.

Out of the eleven offenses listed in the article, the five most serious offenses seem to be: faking your identity online, collecting information about children, using copyrighted images, bullying and trolling, and recording without consent. While all behaviors listed can lead to consequences, these five behaviors are likely to lead to more serious consequences, and some could even result in criminal charges. Identity fraud and bullying or harassment can be considered crimes, so avoiding these behaviors is advisable. Finally, I believe these are the most serious because not only do they result in personal consequences, whoever is on the other end of the offense can experience long-lasting effects such as mental health issues, loss in revenue, and reputational harm.

References

Slynchuk, A.
