- Describe your current methods of study. How do you study for each class?
My current methods of stud are not very good and could definitely use some improvement. When I have a test or quiz coming up I tend to start by re reading all the notes I took in that class. After I read my notes a few times I usually make flash cards, or find a quizlet that already has all the information I need to know.
- Some techniques I use in class include highlighting and underlining information that I know is important and underlining the main points in my notes.
- Outside of class I mostly study by making flashcards because it is the easiest for me to retain information that way. I also have my friends or family members quiz me on my flashcards.
- Identify one class in which you are doing well (not HLTH 101). What study methods work best and why?
So far I am doing relatively well in chem lab and chem lecture. For chem lab I just make sure before each lab I review what we will be doing that class so that way I understand what will go on before I go into class. For chem lecture I have been taking really detailed notes and also writing down the math examples from class in order to remember how to do certain conversions, etc.
- Identify one class where you are experiencing challenges and address the following questions
So far, my challenging class is history. For study strategies I plan on making a small study group to prepare for exams, quizzes, and tests together as a group. I plan on attending any review sessions if those become available. I plan on studying about thirty minutes five days a week so that I don’t have to cram all the information in one long study session. Based on my current understanding I need to spend time really going through the previous discussion board questions and reviewing them to make sure I know all the answers and also to go through key figures and dates during the civil war.
As of right now I have not been very systematic about preparing for the exam, and I plan on studying the rest of the week and this weekend to ensure I am ready. Taking advantage of all the resources on campus is something that has not crossed my mind much because I’ve been so busy, and I am definitely struggling to find my motivation to study since history doesn’t really interest me but I need to get through this class to go into learning what I really want to learn about.
I do not know if my exam prep will go well because I haven’t really done any yet but I am beginning that very soon.
- Review at least 5 academic tips/resources listed here: https://www.odu.edu/success/academic/tipsWhat is one new technique you could try in class to help you better understand the material?
One tip I need to use is having a positive attitude towards exams and class in general. I usually go into exams and tests with the mindset that I’m going to fail instead of a positive mindset and telling myself I am going to pass. Having a positive attitude towards learning will make it more interesting and it will help me to get all the information I need.
- What is one new technique you could try outside of class to help you better understand the material?
One of the tips I could use outside of class is when I write things down in my planner make a to-do list out of it. I should organize the list in order of importance and assignments that are due sooner and make myself a timeline. I should also set reminders on my phone for when assignments are due in order to assure no deadlines are missed or forgotten about.
