I am pursuing a major in Dental Hygiene. I have always had a love for teeth, smiles, and going to the dentist since I was a little girl. Growing up I always told my mom I wanted to be a dentist one day, and that dream has never faded since. Through my high school I was in a dental assisting program my junior and senior year, and that made me fall in love with the field even more. I got to assist my teacher who is a dental hygienist in all sorts of procedures. Through this program, I’ve managed to obtain over 60 hours of community service by shadowing my teacher and assisting chair-side. In addition to practice working in an office, I already have my radiology certification and CPR certification.
Parallel plan:
My parallel major/plan is Nuclear Medicine Technology. I chose this as my parallel major due to the fact that it is in the health sciences field, is a less known about major, and I found it to be very interesting. Nuclear medicine technologists administer small amount of radioactive materials to people for diagnostic imaging purposes. They get to operate machinery that cost a couple thousand dollars. This program would lead me to become a nuclear medicine technologist and I would take diagnostic scans of patients. If I pursue this major I would need to take public speaking, digital literacy, anatomy one and two, physics, and biochemistry. In order to gain professional experience, I would try to make some connections in a hospital and see if I could possibly shadow a nuclear med tech to make sure I think I will enjoy a career in that field. I would still have the same advisor since this major also falls under the health sciences category.
