From delivering babies to finding her perfect fit

I interviewed Melissa Langenfeld, Clinical coornator at the Virginia Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery Center. Her position in her job is clinical coordinator which includes knowing how to scrub in the OR, working in the pre-op area, and also the PACU. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with her bachelor’s degree in Nursing.

Melissa’s inspiration for becoming a nurse came from the popular show, “Rescue 911.” She was always interested in learning about math and science, and essentially used her strength in those subjects to pursue her career. Her job now incorporates many positions, from being a scrub tech and PACU nurse to being a clinical leader. She went from being in labor and delivery for about 10 years to working as a nurse at a doctors office, which she quote “hated and knew it wasn’t something she could continue.” After leaving her office postion, she worked in the hospital for a few years and eventually ended up where she is now. There are many things I took away from this interview with Melissa. I knew going into college and majoring in nursing was going to be a struggle. But realizing how many opportunities there are with this major has made me more firm in my decision with becoming a nurse. Melissa has worked different jobs, from working labor and delivery, to now working in her dream role which encompasses more than being the title of clinical coordinator. By speaking with Melissa, I have learned that there are serveal different career paths in the nursing field. I think interviewing her helped me understand, that although it is my dream to become a labor and delivery nurse, there are many other job opportunities for someone with a nursing degree.
