Right now I am a freshman at Old Dominion University, majoring in nursing. As a kid I was always getting sick or breaking bones meaning I was in the hospital a lot. Throughout my experiences in the hospital I recognized that nurses can have a huge impact on a child’s experience in the hospital. This inspired me to want to be a nurse. I wanted to be the change that made childrens experience better. Along with wanting to be the change I have always loved working with children. Growing up I would volunteer at my church and help with toddlers Sunday school classes, along with helping my sister watch my little cousin. As I got into middle school my interest in nursing expanded. Throughout middle school I participated in a handful of summer camps at the hospital. These summer camps gave me the opportunity to learn basic things such as CPR and see nurses day to day schedule at work. Once I entered high-school I was still extremely interested in nursing, so sophomore year I applied for a two year nursing program. I got accepted into the program but had to decline the offer in order to receive an advanced diploma. Senior year I was still interested so I applied to work at a nursing home near me. I worked at the nursing home throughout senior year until I left for college. Working at this nursing home gave me the opportunity to get experience with working with seniors. This job showed me that I would enjoy working with children more.
